Back to the topic at hand. My 3gs broke last week. It would just get no service where others with iphones got full service. So on Saturday I was downtown working so I stopped into the Apple store to see if I could get it replaced. Holy fuck I forgot the ipad was released that day. The place was salammed!

I b-lined past the gawks on up to the thirs floor where the genius' were. Got up there and boom I see an old friend. So I explained my phone problem and he started a work order to replace it. Whlle he was doing the paper work (computer work) he asked if I had played with the iPad. I hadn't and had no intention of but he pulled one out from behind the counter and said to help myself.

Now, while I have NO intention of getting one seeing how I have an iPhone, MBP and MP so there is just too much crossover for me. If I was a traveler maybe, but not for what I do. Anyway, I gotta say the thing is slick. Incredible screen, light, comfortable, intuitive. Slightly lacking on the apps but so was the iphone when it first came out (no app store at all). Also lacking peripheral ports, camera and card reader but I think in the future some of the support will get there.

All-in-all, for the 10 minutes I was playing with it while getting a new phone, I was impressed. If it was something I think I would use all the time, I would definitely pick one up. But, that's not going to happen any time soon.

Boss bought one, so I got to play with it today. I hate all things apple, I am the only person in my company that rocks a PC. That being said, I admire the simplicity of the iPhone/iTouch, and that definitely translates over to the iPad. Some very cool apps, but it is definitely a tweener device. It isn't portable like the iPhone, so it won't replace that type of device - iphone/smartphone will still be the go-to when out and about. It also isn't nearly as powerful as a laptop...my boss says he is going to ditch his Macbook Air for it, because it works with a bluetooth keyboard. One problem...it STILL DOESN'T MULTITASK!@#$% How can this thing be taken seriously when you can't work on a slide deck, switch to the web, and back.

So, end result, IMHO, is that it doesn't replace anything...it is just one more device - though a very cool one.

Lastly, comparing it to the kindle for reading...it seems way heavier than the kindle. It does have a backlight though, so that may be a positive.

The iPhone/iTouch/iPad OS 4 sneak peak on Thursday should be mighty interesting...rumors of multitasking are flying around amongst other things...

Also that video has me drooling. An iPad combined with a McIntosh amp all in a new 4Runner. Drooooool...

for people that consume the web they are great.

I use a laptop constantly because I work on customer sites integrating data. My blackberry takes care of all my needs when I'm not working.

My wife runs an ITouch. It's a nice little gadget. I'm sure we will pony up and buy somebodies version of the IPad at a lower price point in the future for the house and traveling.

I swear you could stamp a turd with an apple logo and you'd get at least some people lining up to buy it for $700

I thought you were comparing it to the Dell I posted. I want the full keyboard and flip screen.

I would too. That is definitely what the modbook is lacking. If I could get that exact layout with a wacom matte screen in a mbp I would be one happy mo-fo.

    LOLOLOLOOLOL..

    Touche. That is friggen hilarious.

I guess there is a use for the iPad after all...

Now all you have to do is JB it to explore it's real functional potential. Certainly makes my iPhone more bearable...With no JB, I wouldn't own the phone.

Funny how Apple, the company that always bitched about opening up the market, is now masterfully employing the walled-garden approach with the products they sell to the public...but I digress...

wait a second here. That background looks a lot like an office.

And that strip of green looks suspiciously like a putting green. All of a sudden the breaking par thing makes more sense...

That some kind of burly case you have the iPad in?

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.
    Well said.

yea, we don't get a lot of work done here. We've got putting surfaces sprinkled all over the office. In the lounge you have to putt under the pool table and ping pong table to reach the green on a tricky par 4.

    The case is pretty slick....http://store.apple.com/us/product/IP...co=MTc0MjU1OTM

It continues to become clearer that I chose the wrong line of work.

Why, so it can crash his device?

I'm hoping mobile devices will finally mean the death of Flash. Android still doesn't have it, but is supposed to get it "sometime soon." Even then, most Android devices that have been sold so far don't have powerful enough hardware to run it. And for those that do get it, have fun when your phone crashes.

Flash is pure fucking bloat. Ask every browser company what the number one cause of crashes is on their platform and they'll tell you it's Flash. The shit needs to go and it needs to go yesterday.

Love them or hate them, Apple's decision to prevent Flash from running on their mobile devices is now forcing web developers to display their content in HTML 5.0. The HTML 5.0 spec contains open standards based functionality that already replaces much of what Flash does. People are working on the rest to eventually replace the full envelope of Flash's capabilities. Initially we're going to see some sites running HTML 5.0 versions parallel to Flash versions. Depending on what device the site sees you're running, it will redirect you to the proper version. As people get more comfortable with it and it gains that last bit of additional functionality, the HTML 5.x spec should be the death of flash.

Flash needs to die. It's the biggest POS that's been utilized on the web.
