"A gaper is a person who drives along a highway and who is gaping at the mountains and slowing the traffic," explained Kim Green, with the Breckenridge Police Department.

Locals have taken to calling April 1: "Gaper Day," which in past years has seen some skiers and snowboarders...bringing alcohol or marijuana on the mountain.
Glad to hear they're only doing this on 4/1.

The reporting on Gaper Day is funny in and of itself.

How hard is it to define the word Gaper? Personally, I think that word is overused.

    Was thinking that too.

Sure they can kick somebody off the mountain/pull their pass for harassing people. But as long as they're sober and simply heckling, they can't be charged with anything.

"If they did it to me, I would have a problem," said Elliott Popovich, who is visiting Breckenridge from Florida. "But if I saw them do it to other people, it would be all right."

    I call April fools joke.

"A gaper is a person who drives along a highway and who is gaping at the mountains and slowing the traffic," explained Kim Green, with the Breckenridge Police Department.

Clearly everyone knows a gaper is actually someone with above normal forehead temprature, and thus prefers ventelation in that region while skiing.

And as has been stated, I can't imagine a police force is going to go around ticketing people for something that smells of a freedom of speech violation...assuming locals are not crossing over to hate speech, which is illegal.

But at least it's only happening one day of the season.

I think the entire industry built around people going down hills is pretty stupid myself.

    1. Spend hundreds of dollars
    2. Drive 2+ hours
    3. Spend more money
    4. Wait in line
    5. Go down hill.
    6. Weeeeeeeee!!

Then you have people taking the activity of going down hills so seriously, that they start fights over it?

Reminds me of the idiocy involved with surfing, which is still better than skiing.

So, you're supposed to be proud if you're a Breck local? Which is, like, a Texan who spent the season?

my favorite part is where people think that "freedom of speech" is a constitutional law that allows you to harass people as long as you are using words only.

Duh. Once you've spent a season in Breck you are gnarlier than anyone else and have the right to pass judgement and make fun of what you once were....Oh wait that's every skiier that's spent a season anywhere, not just Texans in Breck....
