    2010 AdamBarkerPhotography Photo Annual

Every year, ski photogs submit thousands of images. Of those thousands, a very small percentage are held by publications to (hopefully) be published that season. Of the held images, an even smaller percentage are actually published. And then what...hard drive graveyard???

Not so much. People should be able to see the work that goes into every season, from both behind and in front of the lens. The athletes work hard, the photogs work hard, and competition is fierce not only among photographers, but among the editorial peeps as well for pages. This year was a particularly tough year for pages in magazines as advertisers were clutching tight to what little budget remained after the economic gut punch.

All that said, I had an awesome season last year. Good times, with great athletes, in cool places, skiing the deepter. I've been fortunate to have a select few images published in varying mags this winter. Below are the almost forgotten. Held but never published.

    No hard drive graveyard here...

I'm pretty sure that aspiring photogs everywhere just decided to sell all their gear, because if THAT doesn't get published?!?! then I fail to see what will.

Gorgeous shots adam. Self published coffee table book?

Watching your work progress over the last few years is truly inspiring.... I can only hope one day to be able to produce a single shot as good as any of yours. Keep up the amazing work.

Solid work as always Griz...thanks for the stoke.

Can you "save" these and pitch them to advertisers next year etc... as the economy gets better, or are they reviewed and rejected never to return?

I was thinking the exact same as I was scrolling through the set... I've always been under the impression that the competition for page-space was stiff, but man, I was way-off. I'm blown away none of those saw any ink.

Excellent work AB. It's super cool of you throw your work up here for us to check out. It's definitely appreciated and respected. Keep up the solid work!

Yo! Thanks all for the comments.

Getting images published is a strange combination of PE politics, page space, story lines, imagery needs, corporate vetos and, finally, image quality. I know for a fact that there are many, many photographers out there who could put out a "held" gallery every bit as impressive and mind blowing. The simple truth is that there is so little space for so many qualified images. You'd like to think that images could get published simply cause they're "that good", but if that were the case, you'd have a train wreck of a publication with no cohesive story and/or brand whatsoever, and anyone that's worked in the publishing industry knows that would never last more than a couple months in this market.

You just have to go into it understanding that. As for next year, most of the pubs, once they've seen the images once, don't care to see them submitted again. That said, I'll definitely have a go mixing up some images for different pubs this year (meaning some of these images were submitted to certain pubs but not others). As for advertisers, if they're inside the ski industry then the images are shot. Gear and apparel date the images, and you have to have the latest and greatest. The images still have adequate shelf life for other ventures, but again, apparel and gear can date the images.

In the end, you do it because you love it. It's not always enough, but if you know what Goliath you're facing when you go into it, it can often make things sting a little less.

What a pleasure to view one great shot after another. This is a thread I will revisit, too much to take in at one time.

Keep up the good work, we appreciate the effort.

Great stuff. It was really interesting and impressive to hear you talk at the Gordy Camp about the profession and what it takes to get just one of these "killer" shots. The work involved is daunting, but the end results are amazing. Thanks for posting and I hope good things continue.
