Hanging out west of Western is for douchebags, it's all about the eastside!
I mean, skinning out west of the crest is for losers, it's all about the eastside!

Anyone have an update from TPR? There were rumors of them reopening, but my emails to them last month went unanswered.

Fuck it, I'm going to. Other thread is for resorts imo.
Going south of Bishop Sunday for some snow sliding. Will bring back stoke...hopefully.

So then Mammoth mtn/June Lake resort reports should all go here
The whole beauty of he bcr's thread last year is that it was basicallly an anti-resort, CA backcountry thread. I think 213 should just rename it. As is I'm still gonna post Tahoe b.c. stoke here cuz I'm crazy like that
(I live in Reno. Reno IS eastern sierra!)

This would require pain, suffering, and winning the lotto for snow conditions, but I think it needs to be attempted. It's in CA, but technically on the WESTSIIEEEDE of the White Mts.
A better view of the sadistic approach required. Not afraid to give this "secret" away as I know hardly anyone would want to try. I was all infatuated w/ the north side of Montgomery, but the west side of this mtn is way bigger, prouder, and tougher to approach. This IS the year to do this if anyone wants to try due to el nino.

Since this smoker managed to get up there with alpine day-wreckers and Langes it can't be that difficult. Plake and Darren Johnson got a heli lift from a rancher and bivvied on the summit with a campfire in 98 or so. And since, at the least, my mechanic and the owner of Footloose both climbed/skied that face in the eighties, and I was with five other guys up there, it's fair to say it's been "attempted".
Actually, it's a lot easier to just hike/skin up Middle Creek on the other side, or you can sled all the way up the canyon to the base of that big W face. Great ski terrain all over that massif and the E side of the Jumpoff to the south--cool granite towers and moderate chutes.
There was definitely some suffering on the way in, but that was just due to us being stupid and hiking on the dry south-facing side of the canyon instead of skinning on the snowy north-facing side. But it's no worse than plenty of East Side approaches--an hour of pretty flat dirt walking in sagebrush.
We skied the N side of Boundary, climbed back up from about halfway, then traversed up the ridge to Montgomery (really nice summit), dropped down the west face to about halfway, and then climbed back up and skied the east side back to middle creek, which is where the best snow is. I don't know what issue, but the story was a BC piece in powder in the early 2000's. That stuff is probably in right now--go get it, it's great skiing. If you camp in the middle creek cirque for two nights you could slay every face up there.

Lol, I already knew Plake skied that thing (didn't know he got heli-lifted). Why would I assume one of the biggest peaks around that can be seen for miles in every direction hasn't been done??? I never implied Montgomery hasn't been skied. Just cuz I used the word "attempt" don't assume I think it's never been done and come in here w/ attitude to correct me. I'm saying it should go down this year cuz the White's don't get a good enough snowpack most years for it to be worth the grovel of getting up there. Oh, but I guess it's easy so never mind. Plus, being west facing you have to really time it right.
And fuck using sleds. BRAAAAAAAAAAP!
So, you climbed up that drainage in the pic or you climbed the northern drainage in that pic?
In other news, I should try to get the world's first descent of the mountaineers route on Whitney this year. Why can't a guy just be stoked on some lines w/out some ppl coming in an giving them shit? I do appreciate any beta on the subject though, so ty.Last edited by BGnight; 01-30-2010 at 10:47 AM.

Not sure how to rename the thread title...let's just consider it the "Ethnographic Eastern Sierra" (Twin Lakes south to Tuttle Creek zones) but if you drain it to the Great Basin floor from the Carson Range, thats east side enough for me, I don't really care as long as pics of skiing and hot naked chicks accompany your post. Today's trivia question: Is the Great Basin endorheic?
Cool shots on Montogomery/Boundary area, I've always looked at that zone as being fun. Hal Klieforth (old school local meteorologist) has hiked from his house in Bishop to the summit of White, thats some gangster shit.
Convict area is getting skied, Pinner dropped a bunch before the storm, even Mendenhall was ridable with downclimbs (its only 4th class) before the transformation. I bet given the still moderately low sun angle, cooler air in place, and decent cloud cover thats been going on that conditions are still bueno, especially the higher and more northerly you go.
Manana will provide some northern eastside zone beta and fun. Stay tuned.
