Got my Oirish on pretty hard last saturday night. Protest songs, traditionals, covers of the Pogues, Cranberries, etc (no U2) and the encore was the Irish National anthem, American National anthem and God Bless America sung sung by a well known local that also performed it at fenway park. Not a dry eye in the house and plenny of hugs from strangers and friends I'd never met.
There is no "best" but these guys got the Clash fired up to change the world And Phil Lynott was one bad ass dude

always up for some good craic, Woodsy. The girl I brought with me was duly impressed. Met by my buddy Seamus aka Papa Bear at the door, big hugs and an introduction, he runs the show there, books all the music, very colorful character, good guy to know on the Cape. She said it was more fun than she'd had in a long time.

Definitely SLF. I still throw Go For It on the turntable once in a while. Not as loud as their earlier stuff but I always liked it as much.

Wouldn't that place them high in the running for best Irish band? I mean, they're not number one because of the Dubliners, but they're competitive.

If Boston Irish counts, then Dropkick Murphys should be considered

We met the mom of the woman that painted the epic shot posted, she's like a british bo derek at 70 and pretty sure the shameless one took her home, etc. Planning a trip to Ireland with him and a cool group for an epic adventure next year. Sláinte !

the saga continues. This was the the entertainment last night https://www.rareouldtimes.com/music

it's interesting when the singer goes acapella and most folks stop talking, yet a few don't. The dagger stares and shushes were pretty funny. Some dames just can't stop yapping, I heard one say " Well, Then. I'm not irish " and kept yapping. SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR 5 minutes !

Yah, Bono is pretentious. Talks a lot. blah blah blah. Yes everything post-achtung has sucked, excepting 2-3 songs. and yah the subject of music is opinionated as hell.

Given all that, Fuck the haters. U2 DEFINED the 80s. Name ANY body of work that rivals war-achtung. Since, say, Zep 1-IV. Floyd through wall but that's all 70s. springsteen only thing that comes close.

Thin lizzy, fine. for like. an album.

"I was there when they crucified my lord...". Etc.

probably the most eloquent statement of organized religion I've seen a long, long time.

I like earlier U2 (first decade or so), but so many other bands that I think turned out albums throughout their career that were far more consistently better than U2.

From the same era: Smiths, James, all of New Model Army's albums...

Sorry man, that's just a ridiculous assertion, there's plenty that not only rival but far surpass U2.

Rush! Permanent Waves - Power Windows. 5 studio records from 80-85 (not even including the live Exit...Stage Left). Not even really their best work IMO but you wanted 80s rather than 70s so there ya go. Take it back to 76's 2112 or all the way to the debut in 74 and it's not even close.

Metallica - Kill 'em All to Justice or the Black Album.

Iron Maiden through Powerslave or Somewhere In Time

The 6 original Van Halen w/DLR from 78-84

If you're gonna mention Zep & Floyd, gotta also mention:
The 1st 6 Sabbath records through Sabotage &
The 1st 5 Aerosmith records through Draw The Line,
"The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size."

Another data point to confirm that I'm the only person in the world who really likes Zooropa.

    I'm okay with that.
