How is Dark Star Orchestra now that John is gone?

Jeff is, and has always been a very good guitarist, He's also a great teacher. I spent many Tuesday nights at the Pastime Pub in Amityville, NY drinking 25 cent Millers when he was with the Band Volunteers, they also had a great house in Hempstead that was lots of fun. Jeff is probably the only one of my friends who has never worked a real job in his life, He's always made money with his guitar. He's a great guy, very talented, Glad he's doing well.

Two shows this past weekend were the typical great time with these guys. Fri was an original set and the ended with a rippin' version of White Rabbit...which admittedly was a little shocking when they first went into it, but Lisa f'n killed it.

Second night was sold out and being the knuckleheads that we are, we waited til last minute to head down to the show and the line was a mile long...because like all the stoners, they wait til last minute. I think we missed two or three songs. They called the show '78 Duke, but the first set didn't seem to match up...or it could be me. It doesn't matter because it was a good show anyway. They added Ripple as a filler in the end.

Absolutely completely totally dropped the damn ball and missed this show. Just weak. Cool they played a Portland show in Portland. My wifes cousin was there for both.

Funny how many kids at these shows never saw the Dead live. Met one guy who has a terabyte dedicated to the Dead...which is apparently every live show. It was painful for him to say that he never saw them live. He went on to say he missed Highgate because he had to take SAT's. Assumed he'd catch the next local show that never happened.

i assume there is a normal expected amount of what might be considered assholishness when you are rich and famous and talented. there were a few things previously that made me think bobby could be an asshole but after seeing the other one he seemed like he had some serious asshole potential. i also thought billy's comment in his book about bobby songs compared to jerry songs was pretty funny because though i am no musician i sort of felt the same way in the back of my head.

still waiting for my first dso show after 50+ dead shows. i went to the first furthur show shortly after jerry died and it was too much and too sad. never went to anything related until i saw whichever iteration it was at cuthbert about 5 years ago and it was great but sad because everybody was old. had no interest in dso until the boy took to the dead and now i will take him if they come to pdx so he can catch a glimpse of what it was like.

Great shows past two nights from these guys! They are tight! Fri was an original with a bird song, terrapin, and a ripping sugar mags. Last night was MSG 9/18/88. A good time was had!

It was fun man. These guys are so tight. They threw a white rabbit adder at the end. It is the first show for me without drums/space. I thought it was an original set.

Totally agree. Saw them a couple weeks ago where they did 7/5/69 -- opens with Morning Dew then goes Dark Star> St Stephen>The Eleven. They looked like they were having so much fun doing 25 minute improvs where they could really play and show their chops in a way that they can't doing lost sailor> saint era shows

Wow when was that? I spent a fair bit of time hangin' at Volunteers shows at The Right Track Inn and seeing Jeff at that dive bar in Massapequa by the mall on Wednesday nights. It was usually Jeff, Tommy and Jen acoustic. She's playing with Tom now in The Englishtown Project. How did I miss the house?

FYI that band The Englishtown Project is really really good too and worth making the effort to get out and see them.

FYI that band The Englishtown Project is really really good too and worth making the effort to get out and see them.

I think started going to Pastimes while in high school with friends from work in 1980, they were open till '83 or 4 I think. Jeff did an acoustic thing at the cowboy bar Diamond Lil's on Wednesdays, and they also played Good Times(?) by the mall. I went to the RTI quite a bit since it wasjust down the parkway from my house. The house in Hempstead was rented by Jim Mueler (sp) and Billy Katz and was easily identified by the big Steal Your Face painted on the front between the windows. They rented rooms occasionally and one day a friend was telling me about the house he just moved into full of dead heads, when I told him I knew the house he started repeating "8 Duryea man, that's it, 8 Duryea" he was never very stable mentally and pharmaceuticals didn't help, but he was a great drummer.

Nice. I was really in the mood for a Morning Dew, Bird Song, Wharf, or Althea.

Watched "The other one" last night. It's fairly old now, but worth a watch.
