2 door pick-up. No back seat.
Less buddies in the car = less fucked-up ideas and less trouble.
Group of guys will take someone else's car and thus keeping your kid safe in a different manner.

Yup.
My dad was director of Electrical Engineering at Honeywell's Seattle operations when I was in high school. I think he could've afforded to buy me a nice car if he'd wanted, he never seemed to have any problem buying them for himself.
Instead he gave me a $20/month allowance and said if I wanted any more I'd have to earn it.
Maybe he was a bad dad but I sure never grew up feeling like I was owed anything....Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain...

That's retarded. They will just pile in then back and get flung out and many will die.

Whatever it is make sure it has bench seats so that it's easy for his girlfriend/boyfriend to blow him.

1964-66 Chrysler Imperial. The only car so crash-proof that it is banned from demo derby use.
Or a 79 chevy malibu because it was my first car (in 1996) and served me well. Bench seats front and back, front bench back can flip back to make the whole car into a mattress.

Honda Fit? Good mileage, high resale, fun car (but not too exciting), safe, reliable...

If I had $10k when I was his age, a VW would have been nice. You can get stick, all-wheel drive, etc, and they seem to last a while. But Subi is probably the best way to go.

If you don't have snow outside your door, what the fuck are you living there for?"

I would suggest you look at 01 or 02 Audi A4's, either sedan or avant. Very safe car, AWD and can be had with manual trans. for less than $10k.

Restored VW Thing.
Got my kid a Jeep Grand Cherokee, 6 cylinder. Very dependable so far.
Here's a pic of her friends Mitsubishi about 8 months after she got it. Went through a car lot, totaled 4 cars, seriously damaged two more, knocked down a canopy, and flipped the car. She walked away with 3 scratches, and still didn't get it.

QFT
pisses me right off when I get to school to see all the cockfags in their $90,000 BMW's that mommy and daddy bought them. Then I laugh when they total them cause they can't drive, and buddy who got hit gets a couple grand for his beater, finds a new one and moves on.
I afforded my truck (b2200. great truck. if I were doing it again I would get the b2600 for teh 4X4) working 3 days a week at the grocery store that pays minimum wage. He can do the same. it may be an 87, but because its japaneese, its still runs better than my parents 02 minivan. plus I don't need to drop the engine to change the spark plugs.
If you are really set on buying him a car, split half the cost, up to a certain amount (IMO, you kicking in $3000 would more than suffice)
Put the rest of the $$ away untill he graduates from college. then suprise him by paying off some of his tuition when he is in debt up to his eyeballs, once he has worked his ass off for it.Originally Posted by Smoke

Why do some of you fuckers keep insisting on trying to tell people how to spend their money? If he wants to buy his kid a $10k car, why do you care? Just because you didn't get a $10k car when you were 16?? Get over it. To some people, $10k is not an unreasonable amount to spend on a first car, myself included. Now if he was going to buy his kid a brand new luxury car, then I would say he's a little outta line, but that's not the case.

Baaaaad idea. When I was a teen, whoever had a truck instantly had the trouble mobile. "Hey let's take your pick up and go grab the kegs" "There's a road sign I want, let's take your truck" etc etc. We may have been following in our small cars, but a truck (or large van) was almost always involved in the mischief. I'll never forget the time I was riding in the bed of a friend's pick up, going about 85 when he locked up the brakes to see how long of a skid mark he could make.
Where do you live? Will it see snow? Does the kid know how to handle snow yet? Is back road bombing or boulevard drag racing a possibility (hint, you want to avoid those)?
I'm part of the get him a beater club. Kids trash their first car. I put 50,000 on in the first year I had my 10 year old hand me down already high mileage Grand Am. The shit my friends and I did in/to that car, trust me you don't want that on a $15k car. Save that for a college graduation present.
I see lots of early-mid 90s Subarus still on the road and for sale at decent prices. Fairly reliable, boring enough he won't knock anyone up in it, lots of space for skis, bikes, etc. Good in snow, bad at boulevard drag racing.
Jetta if your kid is gay, bi-curious or likes cars that need lots of maintenance.

I still drive my first car some 7 and a half years later. Many of the opinions here would have had some things to say about it being too nice.
With that being said, I got my first car when I was 16 and it was after I had been working for 2 years officially- I was sacking groceries 20 hours a week at 14 and had been mowing our yard/the neighbors yard at ~10. My parents swore up and down to me that if I wanted a car I would be buying it myself. I had my eyes on some shitty cars. Having worked significant hours for $5.35 an hour I was well aware of the value of money. My parents surprised me with the car and I have treated and still treat it nice. When they gave it to me my dad took me aside and told me that this was the one car I would ever get from him and not to fuck it up.
For some reason, my dad was really able put the fear in me not to really mess up. He told me when I turned 13 that if he found out I did any drugs while I lived at home he would kick me out and not help me with my college education. I honestly believed him enough to never once do drugs in HS when lots of people around me were. I also never fucked up with the car.

He'll need nothing beside 15 gallons of diesel and 5 gallons of high-octane gasoline.

I'll throw in with 4runner.
For what you want to spend or alot less, you can get leather, lower miles and if you don't need 4wd find a 2 wheel drive. It will last till college if he takes care of it.
