Damn that was sick! Love the POV coming off the cliff into the glades. I've kite surfed before here around Cape Cod but nothing like that....sick!

Question... why doesn't Jackson make the gate system so that to get through the gate, you have to be beeping? Like if it senses you are beeping, the gate unlocks or something.
So sick of being followed out the gates by gomers and seeing them out there w/o gear. And, today was really bad.

Not sure where else to put this, but props to Jeff Zell at JHMR. He guided me and 2 other "low elevation types" (as he called us) through the JH backcountry with knowledge, precaution, and confidence. For a guy that is JHAF, one of the pioneers of Valdez guides, 2nd place in World Extreme Skiing Championships, and has guided many TGR athletes for their first trip to AK, the guy could not be more humble. I basically had to coax stories out of him. Told us some hilarious early AK heli skiing stories. He took me on what has been, to date, one of the best backcountry runs of my life. Couldnt be a cooler and more down to earth guy. Plus, he can f'in rip. For a guy in his mid 50's he booted better than most of the locals in their 20's/30's and is an impressive (and difficult) guy to follow.
If anyone wants to hire a backcountry guide at JH, I would highly recommend Jeff Zell.Aut Viam Inveniam Aut Faciam.

Village today was corn-o-licious. Did 4 laps on Moran face/woods in the early afternoon because the skiing was so buttery and smooth. Don't even wanna think about what it's gonna be like the rest of this week until we get some more snow, though. Midnight Glory should be interesting tonight to say the least.
Was anyone else on the deck at the ski jump party when it collapsed? I was right at the railing looking out over the jump and managed to hold onto it as the deck fell out beneath me. A real miracle that nobody got seriously hurt!

Don't worry it'll snow around 3 feet Wed/Thurs. We'll be skiing Jackson Fri-Mon so it just has to snow.

big wet slide in no name canyon on Monday afternoon 3/1
starting zone was in a SE facing gulley at about 7800' that had a lot of water cascading into it, probably oversaturating the snow. it ripped to the ground and ran probably 800-900 vertical feet and fucked up a lot of trees, some of which were as thick as my waist. some debris chunks were as big as a kitchen oven and probably weighed over a thousand pounds each. the pictures do not do justice to how far this thing ran, it started well out of view of the 2nd pic
we were the first to traverse through the debris at around 2pm on monday and the debris still seemed really fresh so it may have happened only minutes earlier.
the first two pics are taken uphill from the traverse, the third pic is below the traverse, so you can imagine what would have happened to anyone on the traverse.
uphill, lookers left flank
uphill lookers right flank
below the traverse
be careful on the really warm days, even at the low elevations

Great pictures. These full depth wet slides are likely going to happen again before the snowpack goes completely isothermal in the spring due to that awesome depth hoar. Be careful out there.

yah i worry that this spring could be pretty damn scary
when that slab gets nice and wet/heavy and that depth whore gets lubed up with some water i think we are going to see a lot of climax slides as things warm up

Next week's forecast contains some promise but most of the energy is still expected to split around the Tetons. We might get some zonal flow and cold moisture next wed-thurs. The last few days have certainly shown how short the short end of the stick is when the split flow dominates for three straight weeks. If you love moguls, then it's your lucky day cuz even Targhee is getting rather bumpy. At this point, the resorts will need a two foot storm and some wind to see a return to smooth powder.
From the NOAA, WY regional forecast discussion, which is currently more optimistic than the ID.
LONG TERM...MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY COMPLEX PATTERN THROUGH THE MEDIUM RANGE PERIOD WITH CONSIDERABLE VARIATION FROM MODEL TO MODEL AND RUN TO RUN LEADING TO LOW CONFIDENCE. NEXT UPPER LOW IS STILL GENERALLY EXPECTED TO STAY JUST FAR ENOUGH SOUTH TO HAVE LIMITED EFFECT ACROSS THE AREA ON MONDAY. ANOTHER TROUGH DROPS SE ON TUESDAY WITH AN INCREASING CHANCE OF SNOW OUT WEST...POSSIBLY SPREADING ACROSS THE LOWER ELEVATIONS TUESDAY NIGHT. PATTERN GETS VERY CHAOTIC WEDNESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH YET ANOTHER TROUGH APPROACHING FROM THE NW AND STILL SOME INFLUENCE FROM THE EARLY WEEK STORM WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BER OVER THE PLAINS. SURFACE HIGH OVER THE NRN HIGH PLAINS MAY PRODUCE FOR SOME UPSLOPE AND OVERRUNNING AS THIS NEXT SYSTEM MOVES IN FROM THE NW. STARTED SPREADING SOME 20 TO 30 POPS ACROSS THE W AND N WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND CHANCE POPS BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN ALL OF THE NORTH AND CENTRAL ZONES. COOL NORTH TO NORTHWEST FLOW IS EXPECTED ON THURSDAY WITH SOME LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLY LINGERING. BY FRIDAY...THE GFS AND ECMWF BOTH HAVE BRIEF RIDGING BEFORE THE NEXT SYSTEM APPROACHING THE WEST BY THE END OF THE MEDIUM RANGE PERIOD. VERY CHALLENGING PERIOD WHICH WILL LIKELY NEED DAILY UPDATES AND ADJUSTMENTS.
Beats a high and dry forecast, at least, but the last three weeks have had this basic extended forecast and real snow showed up only twice.Last edited by neckdeep; 03-05-2010 at 02:23 PM.

Up at the Plummer yurt for the week. Found some good settled powder on dead north aspects, crusts with near-surface facets and surface hoar, then dirt with rotten snow that collapsed with skier weight on a southern aspect.
The buried surface hoar/ nsfx layer that is about 25-30 cm down, covered by some wind slab and settled powder, is still reactive on steep rollovers. We cut out a D1 on a ski cut and it propagated about 30' wide, came to rest in a terrain trap.

If "better" means 5-10 inches over 48 hrs and then back to being pwned by the split flow for yet another week, yep, that is what it looks like. It is possible a convergence zone will set up on the Tetons with the two lows stacked around us and one approaching NW, so there's still a longshot hope for a real dump.
If it dries out and gets sunny next week, don't forget nearly all the Ghee's groomers face directly W/SW and are actually rather fun afternoon cruisin/speed lappin from 1-4pm and are mostly empty weekdays. West slope exposure has its advantages during spring conditions. Don't bother unless it is bluebird. If its really warm, even the off-trail softens up by 3; don't show up early cuz its all frozen turd until lunchtime. Sleep it off and then do a 1/2 day ticket.Last edited by neckdeep; 03-09-2010 at 10:13 AM.

there never on history have been two "bad" snow years in a row
sunspot cycles still havent peaked yet (2013) and we're most likely looking at a neutral year and then a la nina year, so for now just enjoy the shitty snow year everyone, its the kind of dues you have to pay to get the 800 inch year that we have coming
God usually grants long summers )like the one we are about have( so you can grow alot and be prepared for gnarly badass super snowy winter... capiche"I think people resist freedom because they're afraid of the unknown. Despite the frustrations of the late start and the feb split flow, the westslope did have 20 very good to great powder days this season, so I wouldn't call it a "bad" year(J-hole perspectives may vary). 06/07 was all little dribbles of snow and only one big dump all season, maybe 2 or 3 good pow days. Thaw began in mid feb. By this point in 07, the rocky steeps were already melted out and the groomers were going rotten and weeping mud. Now that was bad.
Sure has been a shitty spring. Yet again the potential foot of snow in the forecast splits apart and farts out one inch before sliding by to the south. Most potential precip was stripped out of the forecasts, from 6-12" to 4-8" and now 1-2". Never thought I'd see Arizona Snowbowl get more snow than the Tetons. The one model (Euro) that has been correct most of the time sez the misery continues for at least another week and that next week's storm is likely to miss us as well.Last edited by neckdeep; 03-10-2010 at 12:57 PM.
