I learned to ski at Park West (The Canyons) in 1988 I still remember the first day of skiing I was 12 and hated it but realy wanted to ski all my frineds could ski and I could not. Who would have thought 22 years later Im the only one of my friends from those days who skis. I still have found memories of the Ski Program at my Jr I got to do it for the rest of Jr High. I will say there was a gap in my skiing from 1991 to 93 I skied once and I realy learned to ski at Solitude in 1998, thanks to a friend who was a transplant from Greenbay.

First run ever...SNOW TRAILS in Mansfield OH some 25 years ago. Actually "learned" how to ski at the massive mountain of a man, WISP in Mchenry MD...all 800 vertical or so feet.

Didn't Drumlin's operate a T-bar up there for a while? There are so many NELSAPPed (officially and unofficially, most haven't hit NELSAP's radar yet) ski areas in the greater Syracuse area it's unreal. A few right in town. I had heard that SU even ran a ski area up near Skytop for a while. Lot's of possibilities all over

I'm assuming your talking about on the golf course, thats about the only golf course skiing I'll lend any credence to, that is one steep fucking hill. My folks have told me stories of sledding there as kids (pretty sure my old man skied that on long wooden boards back in the 50s too) , sounded sick. Damn lawyers ruin everything.

Powerline road south of 'Cuse on the road to labrador (60" of windblown, even a HUUGE cornice to huck off of, my first frostbite and multiple 40' hucks)

Apulia road or on 91? I've been eyeing the gas pipeline out by Otisco lake. Super steep and should catch enough snow for some serious fun. Easy 1/4 mile hike through county land to the top, trails lead right to it. haven't figured out the bottom yet. Looks like trespassing through some redneck's yard would be required. Maybe a case of PBR in advance would prevent getting shot at.

Swiss Valley, Michigan.

Learned to ski at Swiss Valley, Michigan back in the winter of '83. As a family we skied everywhere within easy driving distance. Plus annual trips out west when we got older.

Cut my teeth at:

Ski World, IN

Now I'm all growns up and taught my son to ski at Swiss Valley when he was 3. We ski there 30+ days a year as a family, I'm there more often and get somewhere around 45 days.

It seems like a world away from all of my Utah riding - because it is.

I learned to ski at Winterplace, West Virginia. I was wearing gray acid wash jeans and trying to hook with a much older chick. I ripped down a blue without falling on my 1st try, I ate the orange fence on the second try.

A few years later I just decided that I needed to ride a snowboard. My brother and I learned at Snowshoe, WV. Not long after I was packing up and moving to Utah.


Winterplace blows, and gets huge crowds, avoid the place. Snowshoe is actually a decent mountain that gets a fair amount of snow. If you live in the South, go to Snowshoe or get on a plane.

My wife learned at Snowbird, UT - I'll never forgive her for that.

My first day was at Mt. Pilchuck which closed up shop 4 years later. It was dumping. After a couple hours on a rope tow, I migrated to the chairlift and was making pseudo parallel turns on 130 cm rental skis (wearing $2 leather lace up boots from Goodwill) in cut powder. Next day was at Snoqualmie. I even caught air.
