Subscriber. It's cheap, full of good porn, and a decent article here and there.

I just recieved a fresh issue of the Journal today and I must say the quality is unsurpassed and it is worth every penny. Keep it up guys!

Its like $9 for a subscription or something like that. I subscribe but sometimes I ask myself why. I guess it helps pass the time in Alabama.

11-12-2009, 06:24 PM #30What happened to all the wild men who used to write for Powder? The stories were actually fun, maybe scary. The writing was creative and adventure oozed from the pages. Lately, it has been ho hum milquetoast boring follow-the-pro crap. Pro skiers are not all that interesting because their stories bore the hell out of me. Who cares? 12 year olds? Hero worship is so 1990s. Bring back the cutting edge wildness the magazine was forever known for. It's almost a pain to read the words these days the writing is so boring. Rob Story, Leslie Anthony, Sean McNamara. Those guys could write. Great pics, though.
(All due respect to the athletes and artists though. Some of them definetly keep it real. Not their fault the format is lame.)"The skis just popped me up out of the snow and I went screaming down the hill on a high better than any heroin junkie." She Ra

^^^Damn, I want to know what a POWDER MAG was like back in the '80s!!
I've probably been a subscriber since 1996 (minus a couple of years probably).
I think a lot of people here are no longer in the POWDER MAG demographic, thus you think they "jumped the shark".
Sorry bros, you're just getting old.

My subscription ends this January and I do like the mag but I won't be renewing. It's fairly expensive up here in Canada, and while Ski Journal is quite a bit more, it is WAY better. I only have enough for one, and it's Ski Journal all the way. I'm sure I'll still buy the odd Powder here at there (like I do with Skier) but I think I'll be picking and choosing (depending on the articles/content). Freeskier is a waste of time in my opinion.

I have a subscription - Good till Next Nov. Not sure if I'll be renewing after it runs out. Powders just not as good as it used to be - it seems to lack real content. I've had a subscription since 1987
What a joke of a resort review this season! I understand the need to make advertising $$$$ but give me a break. I don't want to read some crappy marketing departments description of their ski area. I would pay a little more for the larger format with good, well written, quality content. Ski Journal is doing a much better job.

First off, thanks for all of the props for The Ski Journal.
I have been a Powder subscriber as long as I can remember and I own EVERY SINGLE ISSUE except for a total of 8 random ones that I have not been able to find. I LOVE POWDER. Always have, and always will. That magazine holds a special place in my heart. I would not have had the dream to do what I do if that magazine did not exist. I would not have had the opportunity to do what I do if that magazine did not exist.
Powder has always been the voice of expert skiing in present tence, and I hope it always will be.
Now, let me offer some insight into the publishing world. Powder is owned by a big evil corporation that does not know fuck all about how to properly run a publishing magazine (I.E. Let skiers like DT, Reddick, Hansen, Stifter et al, run a fucking ski mag the way they see fit.) This larger corporation was in financial trouble before the economy took a shit. Their parent company is struggling and thus they are medeling with the Powder guys and fucking up there mag.
Powder has been the voice of skiing for over 30 years, and have given everyone one on this board 30 plus years of stoke, so I say give the guys a benifit of a doubt, I am sure that they will turn it around to its glory days as soon as they can convince the fucking bean counters that own them how to run a mag.
There is no-one in this business more passionate about skiing then those guys.

I've read and been inspired by Powder for half my life (16 years now). There have been good and bad issues like all publications. I find the more recent issues to be mundane though. I understand it's difficult for magazines now, with all of the free available content.
At 16, all I wanted to see was a pic of a huge huck or a super deep turn in an alpine environment. But now I guess it has evolved and I am looking for purity. Not sure I can articulate it, but words that come to mind are new stashes, amateur stoke, genuine articles, and realistic stories on how it happened. My opinion.

Quoted for truth, by someone in the know. If you really want to see "the suck" pick up "Ski". Sure "Powder" has had better years, but there is still lots of good porn in it's pages. Like I said before, at least they are throwing a few bones to mags for pictures and articles.
I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...iscariot

<ski mag rant>
So I get Ski magazine because for some reason it comes for free with my Colorado Pass, so whatever it's free I'll read it.
Okay, that magazine makes me almost hate skiers. I'm a snowboarder, but I pretty much only ride with skiers as I'm mostly into steeps and all my boarder friends are newer to the sport so they hang out in the park and on the blues. Anyway, during the season I'm stoked on most skiers, and then in the offseason I'll actually read some of the SKI issues and it just pisses me off. Seriously, Deer Valley the best resort in North American???? Again??? Really? What demographic actually reads SKI? Super rich old white guys only?

Yes,
and, yes.
With that said, I have a build up of subscriptions to both for the next 3 years which is unfortunate because I don't think I've actually read either mag for 2+ years. I keep carrying around a stack thinking I'll get to them, but I don't. I won't renew in 2012 because it is just more crap I have hanging around my house. I can't even get excited about the gear review months.

I think I have every issue since '92. I wasn't going to subscribe this year but the last issue was the McConkey tribute so I resubscribed. But I now subscribe to Backcountry and will subscribe to The Ski Journal next year instead of powder.
One of my favourite issues of powder was a ski test they did in the 90's where they ran over the skis with a construction roller, threw them off the roof of the building and a bunch of other stuff. I thought that was great.

the writers of Powder is a testiment to leave no child behind. I cant imagine how these writers actually made it through school and then get payed for their content. With unemployment at record levels I know there are talented writers who are stoked on the sport.
Moreover, how about we write and post some articles on here and powder can simply upload then print have some skis or some type of incentives?
Please hire some talent then I can sub to a mag I use to enjoy.

I second that Gunder, well-said. It's tough for everyone this year, and things will get better. Powder has a special legacy that can't be duplicated. I'll always be a reader, even if it doesn't resonate too well with me right now...

Imagine the pot of gold Powder would be sitting on if they hadn't completely fucked up their interweb presence. Interactive online publications are the way of the future.

With Barker, Otter, your crazy AK tr, and the countless other pro and non-pro photogs posting here, I think the content here blows Powder away, on a daily basis.
If I found myself constipated, Powder, Climbing, Skiing, Dirt Rider, or any other mag for that matter, would be a welcome site while sitting on the porcelain chair.
