    smelly microwave

so I picked up a huge, free, newish microwave the other day, but it's full of trash and really smells. Is it easy to de-stinkify microwaves? Is it worth the effort to clean out the trash AND get rid of the smell?

Tell me you stinky microwave stories.

When I was going to college (In vancouver), I lived in res. We had this chiness guy living in res with us. He was an student from china and spoke very little english. Well, he would put fish in the micowave, so anytime you use the micowave your dinner would taste like fish regardless of the meal. He was a little crazy too, leaving fish guts on the counter and not cleaning up after himself. And to top it off, he though one of our roommates was possesed by evil spirits. This guy didn't last too long, and finally they had to move him to another house on campus. (he got to go live with the trades training guys, he must of had fun after that). Actually, they had microwaves everywhere on campus. They had to post signs asking people not to put fish in the microwave.

    pretty lame story.

If it smells like fish, don't try to use "all-natural ecalyptus air freshener" to clean it out. Trust me, eucalyptus and fish REALLY don't mix.

I say keep the microwave, and try to clean it. If you can't get it clean, take it apart and find something evil to do with the parts.

May I suggest this page for some ideas:

When you say "picked up", you mean you fished it from a dumpster right? I mean, why else would it be full of trash?

spray 409 in and turn on for 45 seconds.

    microwaves go for $100.

Some kid decided to move out of his suite and into the frats. He never came back to pick it up (along with his even more stinky micro fridge) so his suite mates stuffed it full of their trash and put it out in the hall. It seems to work too.

    That's so disgusting!

But that said, I love to clean. So I am intrigued. Sounds like you need to put on some latex gloves, get out lots of really noxious chemicals and go to work. But really good and thorough cleaning skills are hard to teach. You have to be born obsessive to do it right.

Sigh...I wish I could come over and just clean that stinky microwave for you. When you saw how I could transform it, you'd have like a near-religious experience and bow down before me. Happens all the time in this house.

that's just what your putrid microwave needs, noxious chemicals ... make sure you only heat inert stuff like chef boyardee and you're good to go.

Me and my buddy always wanted to fill a microwave up with gas and aresol cans. We figured that we would just turn the dial, it's on older model, and get a really long extension cord and just plug it in. I think it would be fun to watch the thing get blown to hell.

OFF TOPIC but PMS style...Put a cup of 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar, let it steam up the micro. Then wipe down micro, or just use full strength vinegar and wipe it down. I have bought endlesss amounts of stuff from thrift stores and done this. Make sure you wipe down with hot water after Vinegar. (Poor Man's Style)

They also sell these micro cleaners at most supermarkets, that use a steam cleaning approach.
