G20 Summit / Pittsburgh
Watching coverage of protests and police responses on the local news is AWESOME. Friends who took the day off from work said the riot police formations look like "something from a Rage Against The Machine video".
Any Pgh Mags downtown today? If you are, and see any of those damn hippies throwing bricks through windows or rolling dumpsters into private property... show them what kind of aggressive defense makes this the City of Champions!!! Those Greenpeace folks dangling off the West End Bridge yesterday? Should've cut the cables and flushed 'em down the river.

I thought Pittsburgh was a very odd selection for a world summit. I wonder how that happened. It's no Tokyo, Berlin, or Reykjavík.

I am unable to watch the coverage, but are they (the media) painting the city in good light or are the still hanging onto the rust belt steel mill bullshit?
Also, I am kind of uneasy about this whole "protest permit" thing...thoughts on violations of constitutional rights?
Isn't it kind of unconstitutional to deny people the right to peacefully assemble and protest?
Now if they are disruptive, like the whole rolling dumpsters at police and hanging from bridges, fuckem....that is why there are rubber bullets, rock salt, tear gas, and other none leathal forms of forcing shit heads into submission...."don't tase me bro""We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

According to Channel 11 NBC, the only national news anchor broadcasing live from Pittsburgh will be NBC... so it'll be interesting to see how the city is portrayed.
Elkhound Odin: Pittsburgh is actually a very good-looking city these days, and our new convention center is the largest/"greenest" in the country if not the world. I'm biased, obviously, but have been all around the world and still think Pittsburgh is pretty rad. The skiing isn't so great... and maybe that's why I've left/returned twice so far in the past 10 years“Money has never been my god — never.” - The Chief

Here is an article:

It is interesting though that Obama would pick a place that has some of the best health care in the country and 92% of all inhabitants have private health insurance...not to mention one of the lowest current unemployment rates in the country."We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

I wasn't knocking Pittsburgh. I've got nothing against it. It's just that city on the other side if the state. (I grew up in Philly) It's certainly not known as internationally cosmopolitan, that's all. But, good for them.

fair question. Imho, this is 'settled law', in that a town, city, national park, etc cannot deny people the right to assemble. However, they can and do designate exactly what piece of real estate is available for that activity. Sometimes there is some negotiating on where it is. Say you want to protest as Bush's motorcade goes by. IIRC, they don't have to grant you real estate on the sidewalk of that very road, but neither can they grant you a spot two miles away, from where the protesters can't see or hear the motorcade, or vice versa...

From another WSJ article:
The last time the leaders of the G-20 met was April in London, city of a thousand year history and a glowing future. Now it’s in Pittsburgh, a city that is still trying to shed its hulking steel image.
Guess what? So far Pittsburgh is a much nicer site.

Yeah, I am not going to bag on Philly, but a lot could be said about what to me was always the City on the other side of the state I never wanted to spend any time in for the sake of my own safety..."We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

I just spent about 2 hours following protesters through my neighborhood (bloomfield) and into Shadyside. The show of force by the police is damn impressive. The protesters are nothing more than trustafarian brats without any organization.

Oh yeah, and on the way home from work, I had to wait on the on ramp for the parkway west. I got to watch Obamas motorcade go past, so that was fun.

Also, while people from the outside claim Pittsburgh with it's 68% white population is not vary diverse....i think if you ask anyone that lived there for any time about diversity, they would tell you Pittsburgh is extremely diverse, it is just within a different segment of the population. Diversity should not be defined by the color of your skin. I have never been anywhere else in the US where groups of people have so strongly held onto their heritage.
Obviously, it is mostly heritage of "white people"...but the different neighborhoods there have such different feels that come from all over Europe...you have polish, slovak, german, dutch, russian, and so many more. It is actually pretty sweet compared to the giant melting of european cultures into one big clump of white people that you get most places in the US"We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

I bet these people who say this are from Portland or someplace else with "open minds" and 4% black population.
