Ok, then.
They ski like shit.*
*On ice and hard packed very close to it. In any sort of loose, deep and groomed, they´re pretty awesome. One issue has been hookiness in the nose and tail, but pretty much fixed with a gummy stone to the contact points, could see it entirely eliminated with a proper file at 45 degrees..
Slarvy, carvy (for a 56mR ski), and floaty. Very defined balance point, and I suspect I made the tips too long, taking a bit too much sidecut off. There´s a bunch of support in the foreski, due to the long and low rise rocker, but if I were to have another go at it (and I will), I´d shorten the nose/taper down from 44cm to about ten centimeters shorter, the extra length going into sidecut. Look at the thread I just posted, and maybe you´ll find some answers there.. The hookiness mentioned above would probably go away by doing this.
They go through crud like butter, and the tips are soft enough so they want to go upwards once clear through a section of cut-up. Powder, knee deep, goes similarly well.
Speed limit? Perhaps, on ice/groomers. I´ve said before that you can carve anything with a regular sidecut, and you can most definitely carve a 56m radius as well, but since the sidecut is short, that isn´t something I want to do very often. It can get dangerous, and you need to keep on your toes, shifting stance a bunch to achieve some sort of speed control. They go really fast, so maybe it´s just human error. In pow or crud, where the whole surface area comes in some sort of contact with snow, there is absolutely no speed limit. They just go really fucking fast, and if you keep a neutral to forward stance, you can do any turn shape you want. Even bump-making shortturns. If you´re a gaper and tend to pitch your ass and knees backwards in the belief that you can shut down speed doing so, you´d just end up hurting yourself. Most of the depth of the sidecut is in the front (as always), and if I were to calculate the waist-tail portion of the sidecut with a bit of creative CAD-work, it´d be about 80-85m. The tail is pretty stiff, too. Heehee.
So, to sum up, they´re good fun. In all, even remotely good snow.

^^ assuming those are both protests the length difference makes them look totally different. I am guessing the shorter one is the 168 and the longer one is the 196 but just proportionally they look radically different to my eyes. Its a curious things looking at it from a ski design perspective in terms of the ratio of taper to sidecut. Are they the same throughout the model cause the taper on the shorter ski looks may closer (proportionatly) to boot center then on the 196. This makes the shorter version looks more like a powboard then a protest although the sidecut is clearly there. This is just based on what I see when I look at my own protests and powboards.

Good eye, 163 has 53cm and 32cm tip and tail taper, the 196 has 54cm and 33cm. So you are absolutely right, the 163 tapers way closer to boot center than the 177, 186, and 196 lengths.
Every time I look at Mrs.AF on her Protests, I say out loud "Those are some badass skis." And as I've written elsewhere, she loves 'em and skis 'em practically everyday.
Which reminds me of some advice I have for the forum...get your girlfriend this ski. She'll be happier and skiing better (meaning you'll feel less offensive for ripping down the mountain on your Protest 196s and constantly waiting for her with a snow-crusted beard and a shit-eating-grin...hell, even if you don't regularly rip and leave your lady behind, I'm sure you'll find there to be less waiting around in general, the 163 is both fast and agile with good crud busting power), not to mention more likely to tolerate your love affair with the mountain.

Looks like the printer cartridges were low. The lack of color on her skis is by far the biggest source of our relationship problems. Next year, custom graphic and more sex.

The difference in top sheet appearance is a function of the top sheet material, not printer problems. The dull, matte finish is a thick nylon material which is very resistant to scratches and chips. The downside to this material is it is heavy and the appearance.

^^^ not yet.
my ongoing debate on mounting options coupled with the lack of uber-deep days (and having other go to pow-sticks) has delayed their (for me) maiden voyage.
I think that I'm just going to drop my Plums in the existing holes and take them for a spin when I hit Silverton when unguided starts.
(provided there's appropriate snow conditions).
on an unrelated note, I skied the EHPs the last two days and am completely impressed with how well they ski trees.

FWIW, I had some 202s a few years back and loved them in anything soft. They were mounted w/ telemark bindings and ended up being a bit weird on hardpack in telemark turns due to the change in contact point when dropping a knee. No problems doing pturns though. I had major durability issues though - they were from the bamboo sidewall days.
