    Best sports movies

Whatta ya got? I think you have to do it by category.

    Baseball: Bull Durham
Football: I don't know, I think that North Dallas 40 movie is one everyone loves but I've never seen it. Not a big Rudy fan.
Basketball: Hoosiers? Maybe. I feel like there must be something better, but I can't think of it. Hoop Dreams, maybe, but I only saw it once when it first came out.
    Hockey: Slapshot, of course.
Skiing: Downhill Racer. An excellent movie even putting aside the fact that it's about skiing.
Tennis: Are there any? There was that one about Wimbledon from a few years ago, I think, sort of low budget and not very good.
Soccer: If people don't watch the sport itself, would anyone watch a movie about the sport?
Skateboarding: Couple good documentaries recently about 80's skate stars fucking up their lives--Gator and Hosoi (Gator murdered a girl and Hosoi got locked up for drugs). But Back to the Future gets the nod, of course.
Bowling: Kingpin. Are there other bowling movies? Lebowski is a better movie, but calling it a bowling movie is a stretch.
    Golf: Not a sport.
    Curling: the world is waiting.

What a fucking hack of a list...

    Baseball: Field of Dreams
Football: The Program, Rudy, The Waterboy, The Replacements (only cause keanu is terrifically bad in it!).
    Basketball: White Men Can't Jump.
    Hockey: Slapshot, of course.
    Skiing: Ski Patrol
    Tennis: Wimbledon
Skateboarding: Documentaries don't count asshole. Thasher is the best but you couldn't even come up with Gleaming the Cube?
    Bowling: Kingpin.
Golf: Caddy Shack? Happy Gilmore? The Legend of Bagger Vance?
    Curling: You're a douchehole.

    ^^^ Rad. No question.

Although BMX bandits is pretty awesome, and I think it was Nicole Kidman's first movie ever.

Field of Dreams sucks, complete disappointment. I'd put The Natural ahead of that vomit inducer.
Happy Gilmore for golf, but as Happy says himself, it still isn't a sport. Or maybe Caddyshack, can't decide.
White Men Can't Jump--I forgot about it and would've put it in, which is ironic since I've seen it about 20 times (literally--had it on Laser Disc in 1993).
Breaking Away is a great movie, but is there any other biking movie? Not that comes to mind for me. I'm there must be some Euro movies, but I doubt I've ever seen them.

Surfing: Point Break. I know, all you hard core brahs will go with The North Shore or maybe Endless Summer (too much of a surf porn movie to count), but Point Break is a better movie.

You seriously can't decide if Caddyshack is a better movie than Happy Gilmore?

this thread is pointless w/o the representation of "alternative" sports and alternative takes on popular sports, thus mention of:

    Rollerball
    Death Race 2000
    Balls of Fury
    Road Trip: Beer Pong
    Beerfest
    Hard Target
    Airborne
    Air Bud
    Gus

and on the subject of curling: Men With Brooms

    PS
    other biking movies: American Flyers
"Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

    Lightcycling: Tron
    Bobsled: Cool Runnings
    Sailing: Wind
That freediving sport that kills Europeans: The Big Blue
Getting a hummer from Chloe Sevigny: The Brown Bunny
    Canoeing: Deliverance
    Banjo playing: Deliverance
    Sodomy: Deliverance
    Figure skating: The Cutting Edge
    Hockey: Slap Shot
Dog football: Air Bud II, Golden Receiver
    Rodeo: Eight Seconds

The best soccer movie is definitely "Victory" with Sly Stallone, Michael Caine, and Pele.

"Bull Durham" is a much better baseball movie than "Field of Dreams," unless you have daddy issues. That movie isn't even about baseball. I also like "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars."

There are some pretty good football movies, I like "The Program" (even though it is, technically, insane) but will go with "Remember the Titans" as best overall. I'm pretty sure I cried when I saw that, which wouldn't have been so bad except I was on an airplane at the time.

Bikes: Breaking Away or Rad. Rad is much radder, Breaking Away is a "better movie."

Has anyone else seen "Dead Solid Perfect," with Randy Quaid? Good golf movie, based on a book by some journeyman pro.

Cool Runnings dominates all these movies!
Skiing, whether you're in Wisconsin or the Alps, is a dumbass hick country sport that takes place in the middle of winter on a mountain at the end of a dirt road.

Baseball: The Natural, hands down the best

Football: On Any Given Sunday or Friday Night Lights, both are very good

Basketball: Hoosiers is hard to argue against, but I seem to recall One On One being pretty good too

    Hocky: Slapshot without question

Skiing: Sticking to movies with a screenplay Downhill Racer is the shit

Tennis: I never watched a movie about tennis, and feel no need to change that

Soccer: Victory was actually a really good movie featuring some legends of the sport

Skateboarding: The Lords of Dogtown obviously

Cycling:Breaking Away was a great movie

Track and Field: Chariots of Fire was certainly the best, even though Personal Best features Mariel Hemingway in lesbian love scenes.

    Good call on Breaking Away.

I don't know how I forgot to place Vision Quest in my top 10. Louden Swaine is the shit.
