I think ‘78 is the best year. The ‘78 Peggy-O’s are tGD at their very best.

6-22-73 Hunter Seamons matrix. Just fucking unbelievable. Start with Bird Song if you dont have 3 and half hours.
78 as the best year...just no.

I prefer post ‘75 GD, not a big Pig fan, and yes, I get how good ‘73-‘74 is. But I like two drummer Dead. Different strokes and whatnot. I’m a massive Brent head, love ‘80’s Dead, but there is something about ‘78 that just does it for me.

My 2¢, as much as I love primal Dead I'd agree on the post Pig years being more appealing to me but 78 doesn't get my vote...twist my arm and I have to say 74 although 77 and 90 have to be mentioned. 78 has some incredible shows (dozens easily) but I think cocaine, smack and the Keith/Donna drama started to noticeably take their toll on the music as the year went on.

I know it's boring and predictable, but I will still vote for 77. Though I love 78, 75, 76, 67, 80 ... shit I could go on ... 77 never fails to satisfy and amaze.

I did say ymmv. And I hear ya, there are some fantastic songs that hadn't been written yet. But there's also a bunch of stuff they stopped playing, they stopped playing any acoustic (other than 1980), and some of my favorite songs and jams are pigpen songs, they never could reach that sound after he was gone.

I absolutely loved the Terrapin, Help on the Way/Slipknot, Scarlet/Fire era, but yeah ... dropping The Other One etc. really sucked, and not only was Pigpen gone, but they didn't let Phil sing. Then, there was Donna's scalded cat voice which was occasionally in tune.

No it's not, but 1978 is always the wrong choice.

Huh? Donna finally learned how to listen to her monitor in ‘78. It was her best year by far. Ragged but right, ‘78 is the best.
