Is it really this bad? (Job search what the fuck?)
I got back in the country around the start of July after traveling for 7 months. I started looking for work immediately. I've got a business degree, but I've been looking for ANY work. I've applied and interviewed for internships. I've applied and interviewed for manual labor jobs. I don't care what it is. I just need some work to cover my expenses.
The only work I've had since I got back was with an old employer who needed me for a week. They paid me about 150% of my old salary for one weeks worth of work.
I've applied to countless jobs. I've followed up. I've interviewed. I've written thank you notes. I've followed up again. I have never heard back.
Finally, I was told that I would start a job on the first of September. I would be notified of what shift I was on. "Just call on Monday the 24th and we'll let you know when to come in the week of the first. Great! A job!
I call Monday. I leave a message. I send an email. No response.
I call yesterday. I leave a message. I send an email. No response.
I call today. I send an email. No response.
What the fuck has happened. Seriously? No fucking professional courtesy to respond to somebody that you told was about to start work? How can an employer do that to people?
I'll keep applying. I'll keep talking to every contact I have. I hope to never, ever, ever be the kind of person who doesn't respond to people like what has been happening to me.
BTW, any maggots looking to hire? I'm available to work 120 hours per week and I've got some pretty awesome skill sets. Marketing, Finance, DCF Valuations, Landscaping, Tree Falling, Fire Fighting, Guiding Backpacking/Mountaineering Trips, Outdoor Retail, Pizza Delivery, Banking, Bagging Groceries, I've got some varied, but valuable skill sets.

If Rontele won't do it, I will.
Benny may be looking to ditch a few shifts so he can finish up his costume for Comic Con 2009.

I'm shocked that someone with a business degree and marketing and finance skills can't find a job. Isn't the paper-shuffling industry booming?!

Well I am bummed to hear of your challenges, as that is pretty much what my daughter will graduate with next spring.
As far as going back to school, health care. My buddy is a RN and they can't hire enough of them. He has been doing it about 6 years now and makes $80ish a year. Three 12 hour days a week. Is up to 4 weeks PTO (paid time off) per year now. Fucking gross job though.

The trend in the economy is clearly up, not down. There are small signs all over in the businesses and industries I encounder in my line of work. It seems to have started with a trickle a few weeks ago and is clearly picking up.
Advice? Keep looking and you'll find something. It won't be immediately, but it will happen.

And yea, things are looking up in some sectors. We have been hiring one FTE a month. Major PITA for a manager but good for our business and the local economy. Fly-by-night company with over $40B in sales/yr is the clue.
Keep up the informational interviewing, ask the right questions based on previous info interviews, and get to be an unofficial expert in your chosen field.
"What Color is Your Parachute" has some good ways to break down which field you might want to get into. Take it from a self professed believer is Sabbaticalism, that is you should unplug every once in 4-5yrs for at least a year, maybe try something different.
In most cases, if you’re good, you can always go back. Only do that if they are offering a better deal than what you had before otherwise walk away and go get the next bigger fish.
Stay sharp, be gracious, use your business acumen, and good luckEducation must be the answer, we've tried ignorance and it doesn't work!

I think in down economies "communication" degrees are worth more than "business" degrees. Especially the undergraduate kind.
Or I could be totally wrong.

This is why you haven't been hired.
Need all of you computer folks help. I got a job at the brand new best buy in Abby as Computer Sales Associate and Im trying to enhance my computer knowledge. The store doesnt open until October 24th/training begins September 18 but I want to know a lot more by September 18. Also to make this fun we will start a help [me] chart. Whoever answers the question most sufficently (I will judge this) for me gets a point. Top three people in points will get an internet hug from me and a poster of there choice!
First question is how does RPM relate to the computer. I know its how many revolutions the CPU does in a min but what does it mean.

Kevo, CSM? That's a pretty damn employable degree, BUT a lot of students in that program have their undergrad in Mine Engineering and they will be tough competition. They also have a joint program with DU for a dual degree MS Min Econ / JD Min Law

I just posted 2 job openings for a City water department (In NH), let me know if you want the link. My LinkedIn accounts seems to be getting more active with job ads?
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.
