I don't wish they'd go away, but tone down the hype, yes. Of course there are pastry stouts chomping at the bit to take their place and that'll be even more annoying.

I don't have a problem with the "haze craze", although several of the breweries I support make a bit too many and often they all start to taste the same...
That said, I am not a fan of the "bigger" breweries (Sierra Nevada, Firestone, etc.) cranking out mediocre hazes to capitalize on the trend.
I really do appreciate the breweries that deviate from the standard haze hops (Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe, etc) to try and create distinctive flavors. I also applaud the breweries that strive to make hazes that exceed the "standard" low IBU (30-45). I have been digging the West-Coast mutations that up the IBU into the 60+ range, but still keep the fruit forward flavor.


As for the "Brut" thang? The few I've had I've been sorely unimpressed by. Not my thang.

Interesting.
Only my second "milkshake" IPA (the other I've had was Moonraker's Mango Citra).
I think I dug the mango one a bit more.
However, this one reminded me of 15-to-20 years ago when my buddies and I would frequent Toranado in the Lower Haight District of San Francisco and order an Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout cut with a Marin Brewing Company Blueberry Trail Ale to create a "Blueberry Oatmeal Stout".
That was some tasty pastry shit long before "pastry" stouts were a trend.
The bartenders at Toranado thought we were kooks, but they didn't charge us extra for the concoction!

I’ve been to St. Croix a bunch and one of the quirks always was the beer sucks. Before this trip the best beer on the island maybe getting a Sierra Nevada.

Leatherback Brewing is new and damn impressive. Excellent west coast style IPA. Definitely bringing some back.

Are you going to moonraker for the cans or finding them closer to you?

I try to make the hour+ trek to Moonraker when I can and when they have a multiple release or I will hit them up on my way down to Sac or the Bay when I'm either going to a show or visiting the folks/friends. Since they tend to release midweek (usually Wednesday), it's a bit hard with work and whatnot, though this winter I think I got down there 2 or 3 times.

That said, I scored this can at New Moon in Truckee. They have a pretty diverse selection of cans. The only drawback is that often times the cans they have are several months past canning date, so I've purchased some skunked brews on more than one occassion.

Generally speaking, though, it's kinda hard to find Moonraker outside of the brewery.
Philosophy, this new taproom in Truckee, usually has 1 or 2 Moonraker brews on tap, though. But $9 for a 10oz is a bit pricey (imho), so I only hit that spot up every once in a blue moon.

I think for all intents and purposes they really don't sell it anywhere but the brewery.

I believe that the Philosophy taproom in Truckee actually drives down to Moonraker and picks up the kegs they tap.
I would be willing to bet that the New Moon folks did the same with the cans they've had recently.
I first scored Moonraker cans at Zander's in Truckee about 2 summers ago. When I went back a month later and asked the owner about why she didn't have any more she replied that the brewery didn't contact retailers until after they had done their on-site sales and by then they were usually sold out.
Additionally, a coupla summers ago I stumbled upon this pretty decent craft beer store in Placerville. I asked the guy the same question and he laughed. Said that unless you went to the brewery good luck scoring their beers. He even said that he'd gone to the brewery and stood in line and that folks coming out were re-selling the beers in the parking lot for 2-to-3X the original price. I dunno about that, though, as I've stood in line at the brewery on release days and nobody was trying to scalp their beers in the lot.
I also think the "demand" for Moonraker has somewhat subsided, as I've gotten cans up to 2 weeks after the original release at the brewery.
But 2 summers ago you could stand in line for 2+ hours and they'd sell out (the guy in front of you would be from Morgan Hill and the guy behind you would be from Santa Rosa!).

I'll try to remember to take a photo next time I drink one, but had a Bale Breaker Hop Country Session IPA last night and it was very tasty. I'm usually somewhat suspicious of "session" beers, but this one comes in at 5.4%, so it has some substance to it.
