a request for advice from denver/eagle & summit county mags
my oldest son ( just turned 21) is starting on his journey to maggothood .......he and a friend went to a vail associates job fair in chicago saturday, and are now officially lifties at vail starting in november.. and they have a spot saved for them in the subsidized housing apartments for ski company employees... but they are both quite poor and have no gear yet.. i can pass along some old clothes that will fit my son, but i would like some tips on where the best spots would be for them to look for cheap boots and skis in the denver area when they pass through in early november. or in your educated opinions, would they be better off looking in vail/avon or dillon/ frisco/breckinridge for used equipment?

they are going to be lifties at Vail and they don't have ANY gear??? I hope they have something. If they are looking for cheap clothes/gear, check Gart sports Downtown Denver, still some leftover stuff from their big SNIGRAB sale a few weeks ago. They can probably score some cheap pants, jackets, gloves. If they are looking for more than that, such as bindings, boots, etc. dunno.

Washington park, used sport shop on that little town street (Gaylord?) You can find extremely cheap boots.
EDIT
If Denver fails. (sorry
The Vail ski swap used to be very good, haven’t been in years. You have to pay $10? at the door. It’s at the ice rink and I think it takes place around Halloween.
Frisco has a good used ski shop; someone can chime in on the name? For clothing there is some good thrift shops down the valley (from Vial) a lot of money around so good deals can be found. Although it might be a bit late, the yard sales offer plenty. Wakeup early it can be competitive. (Vail)

What size does your son wear? He could probably get hooked up here. I have some old Rossi boots in a 26.5 with some 210 VR27's he can have.

As mentioned befroe Vail has a huge swap around Halloween. There is a fee ($10) to get in but is well worth the price of admission. Gart sports is another great idea. Also, Sports Recycler in Frisco, next to Walmart sometimes has some good stuff. If I hear of anything else I will send you a PM.
Skiing Sucks! What a stupid sport!

If they're passing through Denver early November, tell them to stop at the Denver Ski Expo at the convention center downtown. Colorado Ski and Golf sells off tons of stuff, usually not the greatest equipment, but good deals on clothes, gloves, goggles, etc. You can also pick up coupons/passes for discount lift tickets at lots of resorts in Colorado.

There's a smallish shop - forgot the name, on the main drag in Idaho Springs. They do rental business mainly, and used to sell last season's demos for CHEAP in early Nov. Any Maggots know the place? It's about 200 yards down the street on the right when you take the first Idaho Springs exit (the one after Kermit's.)

i live in rockford and my son lives about 30 miles south of me.. a 26.5 might be his size, he is slightly smaller than i am and i wear a 27/25.5 nordica...... the vr27s would be too much ski for him. ..he is, or at least was, a blue/easy black run skier (he last skied with me 6 years ago at whistler) i have some old, very ugly clothes that will fit him, ..... all he needs is boots, skis/bindings/poles...
thanks for all the help,, any and all suggestions much appreciated !what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

Make sure he gets some properly fitting boots,it's the foundation on which he will build his skiing upon.
Ski swaps are key!
Tell him to make friends at the ski & rental shops around there & see if he can use some of their demo skis.If he doesn't party too much(Yeah right)he should have enough cash to get some skis from a local rep soon. His new friends at the ski shops should be able to hook hook him up with shop forms as well.If that doesn't work, tell him to become an Amway salesman!Calmer than you dude
