    tuning edges....JONG

ya i just got a new edge tool as a present and i was wondering if you guys could fill me in on the basics so i can use it.

it has 2 sides, one for 90 degree, one for 88 degree. what difference will it make? which should i use? despite my shitty knowledge, i consider myself a respectably good skier.

there are 2 sides to the file, each with a different grain or whatever. one pattern looks like this ///////////. the other looks like this xxxxxxxxx

    thanks

Tognar.com seemed to be down atm, so there went a good database...
But google tognar and skitunign and thou shalt find the answah.

Is you´r tuning gismo a SWIX 1 for all tuner, or something other?

If it is, its a piece of shite.(i have one..). Mostly you end up rounding your edges with it.

Get a couple of good files, a ski vice(?) and a good place to work in.

And use the search function on this board and on Gapicski.com.

    Tsah!

    1. Read the manual. It should tell you a lot

    2. Buy a "Ski Tuning" Video from http://www.tognar.com/

    3. Get a catalog from Tognar - it explains alot about base and side degree bevels and what they mean to a ski. Manufacturer's have recommendations on what their skis should be beveled at and the free catalog will tell you.

    dats right!! (basom linked it)

Before we can give you any advice, you need to let us know what kind of skis and sharpener you have, and what your skis side and base bevel are. It may not be in your skis best interests to be going at it with a stone at 88 or 90. You may have an 89 side.

Secondly, if your gonna do the side, you may as well get at the base bevel too if its rusty or in bad shape.

Thirdly, you will need some diamond stones or at the least a gummi stone to take down the burrs before/after sharpening, and to cut out the rust. Going at a rusty and damaged edge with just a file will kill your file in no time.

It seems like its gonna be a pain in the ass to do, but once you get the hang of it, you'll wonder why you waited so long to start.

Read the guide I posted, it has pictures and should help you out a little.

    edit: tognar rules.
