Cascadian Volcano Raid part 3 0f 9 Lassen Peak
05/17/09 Lassen Peak
Lassen Peak is the Southern most Volcano in the Cascade chain and is the high point of Lassen National Park which is riddled with Alpine peaks and Hot springs. What people don’t realize is that Lassen gets pounded by massive amounts of snow during the winter months with snowfall totals that rival Paradise at Mt Rainier (650 Inches).Thank God this was the southern most part of the trip as I’m a cold weather person and the temperature in the city of Redding was 106.
Our objective was to skin up the SE ridge of Lassen and make our first decent down the NE face 2000 vertical feet then skin around the Eastern side of Lassen back to our Ascent route. We would ascend the ridge for a second time and ski down the west face for a 1700 foot decent then skin SE to a low saddle at 8’500 feet then descend the final 400 feet back to the parking lot.
