I am thrilled that this topic is being breached immediately after most of bullwheels have stopped turning; we now have an argument that should last clear until December, and since it is not an election year, there needs to be SOMETHING that is relentlessly and pointlessly debated.

    Oh, and +1 for Jimi.

edit: Ooh, Iceman deletes his smarmy remark, what is the meaning of this?!

Here are some of my favorites for technicality, uniqueness, etc.

    Michael Hedges -- Double Planet

Al DiMeola -- Race With The Devil On A Spanish Highway

Metheny, Hancock, Holland, DeJohnette -- Jack In

I used to think so. But what the fuck do I know, I only know three chords.

I was there for the early show. Saw him four other times.

The more I read and hear about him, and from personal experience, I'm convinced he was all about volume, and bending the feedbacks through that volume. Read the reaction of any great rocker who first saw him - Clapton, Lennon, Zappa, Bloomfield, Townsend, the list goes on. I just heard an interview with McCartney referring to the first time he saw him in London. First, he walks into the club and was stunned by the armada of Marshall amps and speakers before him. Remember, this is one of the best rockers of his time. He said he just stopped, waited, and the man walks out and plugs in. He said that just waked everybody up. The sound of the plug in.

As i said, I saw the New Year's Eve concert. The best way I can describe the sound, is that, when I bought the album six months later, I said, oh, yeah, that's what the drums and bass sound like. Could not hear them hardly at all. I think they were there just to give him a base.

I'm a bit dismayed at the list of guitarists above. Especially that Yngwei Malmsteem dude. please. Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Dick Dale, Mike Bloomfield. At least download a few things form their collections. please.

Edit: Machine Gun still stands as the greatest anthem to the Vietnam War. Although a lot of guys died listening to Fire.

From a purely technical standpoint, Yngwie is pretty impressive. He definitely knows his shit. But he's not very musical or creative, because he's so technically minded it begins to sound mathematical. But his shows are awesome, mostly because it's two hours of comedy. Oh, and the smoke machine smells like waffles and runs non stop. By the end of the show I saw, people had called the fire department, assuming they had another Great White incident.

Hendrix is Hendrix. I don't think you can define him as the greatest, though he may well be. The thing that made Jimi special was his mind, and his ability to speak through his guitar like nobody else could.

Vai is other-worldly. The guy does things that don't even make sense. I'm waaaaaay too young to have seen Hendrix live, but I have to feel like Vai is a similar experience. He will change the way you think about the guitar, and he's one of the most down-to-earth guys on the planet.
Congrats, mags! We collected 1030.68! for birdman!

Eric fell of my list a long time ago. If I hear one more of his cute little ditties I might go postal.
