Reviews 2010:S7,Big Dump, Jimis, VCT's, Titan Zeus

Me:26(been skiing for 20), 175 cm 75 kg aggressive skier, 40 days/year on the mountain
    Skis I own: Pontoons 189, Made ‘n Ak 179, Supermojo 193

So today i had the chance to try some of next year’s skis…

Rossignol S7 188: This was the first ski I got to try. I liked it a lot even if today the conditions weren’t ideal for this ski:some crust but some powder left too.
The skis,as you imagine, perform really well in the pow as long as you don’t go too fast,
They’re a jibby ski, not a big mountain one.In the crust they were ok. I hit a couple of 10-15 footers and they were pretty stable and fun The rocker lets you do pretty much what you want to. A really fun ski that IMHO would be really good as an everyday ski at a resort that gets lots of pow or for a backcountry jibber, of course.
    I’d definitely buy this ski.

Dynastar Big Dump: This is the burliest ski I’ve tried in my life.I’ve tried Squads 191 , XXL 194 , I own Supermojos 193.This ski passes them all.It is made to go FAST!!
It takes a 15-meter-straightline to make it go at 60 mph. You have to stay on it all the time and you can’t almost make it turn if you don’t go fast. I hit a 20 footer and they were super stable at speed but I hadn’t seen a bump that was like 10 mt after the landing and they sent me to outer space making me land flat with my knees into my mouth.Needless to say, in the pow they’re Super! The destroy any track they find, if there’s any. The ski for AK.

Head Jimi 191 : A pretty easy and fun ski.Good at speed and stable while hitting cliffs.A little more rocker would have been much appreciated. A good everyday ski for the ones who don’t love rocker ( personally I do!!). IMHO a good step forward if compared to the Mojo 105’s.

4FRNT VCT 189: I didn’t like this ski at all. Not too fat, too floppy, it doesn’t float at all, lots of chatter : it didn’t give me any good sensation. I just took 1 run on this one.

Blizzard Titan Zeus 191 : It’s a good big mountain ski but nothing that makes you scream “wooow”.It’s pretty stable at speed but the tip is too “catchy” IMO. It suffers tracks and bumps a lot. Maybe a little stiffet tip would have been much better. The rep told me they’re trying to improve their freeride line year after year: let’s hope so. I’d but this ski if I had a good deal on it.

I’m open to any question….have fun!

I ski VCT 182s, and I like them a lot for variable conditions, but wanted something longer, maybe a touch stiffer, and with a little tip rocker for a day-to day ski. I like narrow sidecuts and going fast. Now that that is out, how is the Jimi for flex? Do you think it would be a good choice for me, now that you know what Im trying to step up to? Others I've though about are the vct 189s, next year they'll have a tip rocker option, or maybe Moment Garbones, but I don't want to get my ass kicked either. Sorry to hijack your thread for advice, I just liked the sounds of the Jimi from the dimensions I read and wanted to see what you thought.

I think the Jimi would be one very good option for you.Not the 189 Vct's for sure...

I skied the S7 last weekend. You hit the nail on the head.

Deep pow you can throttle this ski. However, when the snow sets up I can see geting tossed around.

I just sold my S7's ,188 . I had them center mounted , but still had to ski slightly in the back seat. Great in the trees, but slow on the flats back to the lift. (probably too small for me 6' 4",220lbs)

Are the 2010 models any different than 09's? I noticed they have a -2 mount , mine didn't.

    1) you don't STILL have to sit back when you center mount... that's called "causality"

    2) yes, they WERE too small for you

Are they making the S7 any bigger for 09-10 ? I bet that ski would rock in a 194. I am thinking about a ski like this (JJ, CRJ, EHP, Lhasa pow). Seems like it would rock in terms of ripping pow but still skiing the cut up/mank as it starts to form bumps. This is the main problem with full on reverse camber/reverse sidecut - its is the sickness in pow, but I would much prefer some sidecut and maybe some springy old regular camber through the body of the ski to absorb those bumps and make it rail the chop

Umm it comes in a 195cm length and is slightly wider at 117 underfoot in the bigger size...

It is supposed to be a little stiffer too. I hope to track a pair of 195s down for next year, I think they will be the cat's ass.

    About the Blizzards

I have to slightly disagree with you on the Blizzards. I tried them together with Head Jimi's, Movement Goliath Sluff and K2 coomba (2010 model). The conditions were warm, mostly skied out snow with some smaller bumps and occasional ice. I'm about the same specs as the first poster, but I skied these one size smaller, all of them about 187 length +/- one inch.

Out of these the Blizzard was clearly the best one for the conditions. It felt stiffest and went through everything very smoothly and easily. In these conditions especially the Coomba was suffering a lot and didn't handle too well at all. I will need to try the Blizzards in different conditions, but it is currently on my shortlist for a new off-piste ski.

THey have a Progressive sidecut (meaning that all sizes have the same radius, unlike some where the short skis have a crazy tight radius), but this means that the smaller sizes are narrower.

the 195cm Super7 is 117mm, the 188cm is 115mm, and the 160-something is 110 underfoot, jsut to give you and idea...

all skis are the same construction except for the Super7, which has carbon and titanal sheets.

Hope that is what you wanted...

I have to disagree on the review of the Big Dump, I thought they were pretty easy to handle, way easier then my 187 XXL's. Semi open trees were fine. Really fun to ski. When I got a chance to ski them in deeper snow I could take them anywhere. Yes, it is a bigger ski then many, but not on the level that you say it is.

You know what?I've talked to other people who tried they and they told me the exact thing you're saying.I'm startin to think that i've tried some proto/team version or maybe it was just the demo binders mounted too far back...

Any news on how the 195 S7 is going to be the same as the 195 pro version? Is it it just going to be a longer 188?
