Shwayze has come on my radar lately - breezy, fun, nothing heavy.

Hip-Hop 101:
1. Hip-Hop is a culture NOT a style of music
2. Hip-Hop culture consists of the following: Music (rap, turntablism), Dance(breaking), and art (graffiti)
And if Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III is the best rap you've listened to in years, you really need to open up your ears a little more.
As for Schwayze? PUHLEEESE! That is the most wacktastical, watered down, MOR (c)rap to come down the pike in ages. It's Malibu made pap for the eazy listening muzak crowd who sip chardonnay on the seashore whilst watching re-runs of The O.C.

Fucking snob. I didn't call his music the new Jesus, I added it to my fucking Pandora playlist. Not every damn record needs to be some earth shattering shit - look through your own music collection and you'll find plenty of records that agree with me.
You can tell why I like it - suggest something better that fills the same niche in my playlist.another Handsome Boy graduate

^^
If you must go the Schwayze route...
1. Beck (they totally copped his laid back stoner white dude schtick and he still does it the best).
2. Bad Ronald (Brits doing the laid back stoner white dude schtick, but with a British accent)
3. Len
4. BranVan 3000
5. 1000 Clowns

Seriously?! The album you took your avatar from is exponentially better, as are countless other albums. I just really ain't feeling Lil' Wayne at all.
And Dookey, I know it's semantics, but I would argue that hip hop is a type of music, while rap is the lyrical component of hip hop. Although I would also say there is hip hop music and hip hop culture. As Daddy-O (Stetsasonic) said "It ain't nothing like hip hop music, you like it 'cause you choose it...", or check the Roots "It sounds so nice, hip hop you're the love of my life"

i still stand by what i said, lil wayne is dope! i wasn't really a believer for a long time and then this last summer I got the carter III and it changed my whole perspective.
And yes the new danger is an amazing album, but then again any rap with live instruments is pretty off the chain.
I am so sorry i don't get down with most of this underground hip hop anymore or even that much mainstream hip hop. but there is something about a lot of 'underground rap' that is lacking, its hard to put it into words, but even aceyalone slipped pretty hard in the late 90s and early 00s. I don't even listen to the roots that much anymore and i've seen them live close to 50 times. something about some of this shit out there just seems stagnant like atmosphere pretty much all their albums seem the same. most of the shit listed has hooks and choruses that are flat out wack. that's what i like about lil wayne, he keeps it fresh and has some crazy ill rhymes and flow. Mos def changed his style up with the new danger and that's why i liked that album. i still need to find a copy of this new myka9 album because i was a pretty big fan of the freestyle fellowship and all west coast cypher rap for that matter. i'd listen to ghostface any day over sadat x or 2mex, just because an artist is widespread and mainstream doesn't mean it isn't good.

I mean have we covered the basics here ? Do you have plenty of Tribe Called Quest (hip hops starts and ends here), Notorious B.I.G.(the natural), Slick Rick ( Da Art of Storytelling to be specific) and early Outkast, Cypress Hill, Gangstarr, Hiroglyphics, Erik B and Rakim ?
If any of those are missing from your rotation I would straighten that out first, before moving on to the new stuff. I like Devin the Dude, Murs, MF Doom, J-Dilla, The Grouch, Zion I, CunningLinguists, Pep Love, and Macklemore.
Also a few easily forgotten faves that you might want to revisit - Nappy Roots (their first one) Skee-Lo (think he only made one, for some reason, nobody I know realized it was good) Eric sermon/Def Squad, Nate Dogg (he is just dope), Mod def (so is he), and Mac Dre (he will crack you up), Hi -Tek and Talib Qwali also rip.
And also, as for little wayne, I know he sounds crazy and releases mixtapes and fluctuates the tones of his voice like no other rapper really does and all, but he is also just sort of says the same shit, as every other mainstream hip hop artist which is 13 gazillion different variations of the fact that he is dope, gets a lot of women, and has a lot of money. I have his albums but dont really like them and dont really know why people fuss about him. I dont think 20 years from now we will all remember his career for really contributing that much creative music to the genre of hip hop
Oh and check out Intik. they are french but VERY good

Yes, I've got my basics down pat, as my first rap album was the low-end theory and moved on from there with all the ones you listed.
Non-mentions I've also been diggin: High Decibels, Factor and Grip Grand. Also Mr. Lif is goddamn ridiculous, I don't really feel that can be said enough.

thanks for filling me in on hip hop culture, but i would argue that hip hop is also a style of music. Rap is a sub category of hip hop MUSIC. while i believe hip hop is a culture, i also believe it is music.
Case point: Erykah Badu. Definitely not rap, not really R&B, could be argued as neo soul, but considered by most to be hip hop. She is self proclaimed hip hop. She is the epitamy of hip hop, the definition.

The new Awol One album, Owl Hours, is gonna be good methinks.
A lot of it is already on You Tube, pretty cool to be leaking most of your album before its released. Keeping it underground when mainstream is staring you right in the face.
