    Wtf, no mention of:
    Battle of the Planets
Buck Rogers in the 21st Century
    Armageddon

    Re-casting votes for:
    The Last Starfighter
    Robinson Crusoe on Mars
    Enemy Mine

And the thing about 2001 is that it really kicked off the next gen of special effects. My mom is old enough that she saw it in the theaters when it first opened and says that there were lines around the block. nobody had seen special effects of that nature up to that point, so despite the convoluted nature of the story, the visuals were literally mind-blowing for the time. 2001 more or less paved the way for Star Wars, in terms of special effects innovation. Douglas Trumball was the man back in the day and the film was and still is visually stunning (it really needs to be seen on the big screen). Some of you have mentioned Brian DePalma's Mission To Mars, which totally is inspired (visually) by 2001. Like it or not, 2001 was a benchmark sci-fi film.

Loved Robinson Crusoe on Mars .... the others, not so much.

DePalma's Mission to Mars blew chunks; heck Red Planet was better than MtM.

doppelgänger (aka: journey to the far side of the sun)
star wars/empire strikes back (all the prequels=crap)

    bad but fun :
