We had fins on our snowboards in 1986. Thought they'd help us hold an edge on the piste since we didn't have any kind of real bindings / highbacks. Basically just created lots of drag and didn't help at all.
If you are coming out west to demo, you absolutely must put Ski Brokeback on your list of stops. I can't believe I'm the first to mention that after more than 100 posts in this thread.
I'm sure these would rule on Brokeback's slopes - especially trails like Glory Hole, Ramrod or anything off the Uranus lift.
Good luck with that.**

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

You are right,
a kind of "split board a la Rax" with downhill bindings
and streamlined fins.
Wooden core with horizontal layers, extremely elastic.
Endless 50 degrees slope covered with 10cm soft firn
(corn snow).
Surfing (or rather flying) down as fast as the air pressure on your goggles allows.
That is FUN!!

I know I guy in cham who likes straight-lining narrow couloirs at Flegere on 196 cm skis. Skiers must dive for cover when he rockets out on the piste at mach 2!
Tom has mentioned special ability of the RAX skis for straight-lining iced up 55º couloirs 1m wide over cliffs.
Could you post us some video demonstrating this how this works?

I will be in the Magic Mountain area of VT from the 13th to the 15th with a bunch of mags. Any chance I could hop on some RAX? Super stoked to try out what some are saying is the next generation of skiing. YES WE CAN!
TR is sure to follow.

And judging from your videos the people willing to let themselves be filmed for you don't understand it either...
I wish I could face you at the top of a 35 degree slope covered in thigh deep blower with a flat runout at the bottom....Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain...

These skis are
short
gimmicky
resemble ski blades
I can't think of a worse place for the thread starter to post this than TGR

Hey Tom, why don't you call them what they are. They aren't skis. They are snowblades with brakes. Yeah, no doubt... any one can straight line a narrow chute leaning back away from the fall line, digging the anchors...errr...I mean "fins" into the snow pack. Straight lining with the brakes on at a whopping 20 km's per hour must be a real rush.
The Brits might like them though, the snow blades seem to be a real hit with them around here, not that there's anything "wrong" with that per say.
Let's break it down a bit further. Snow blades are basically a shortened version of a childs beginner ski for adults that can't ski worth shit and want to save face (if possible), so they just renamed the childs ski to "snowblade" and since they can turn them they think they are the bomb. That's my version of the facts and I'm sticking to it.... Congrats on the "improvement".

Is he still alive ?
Straight-lining on Rax skis is much like riding down
steep couloirs on Firngleiter
but you are getting immense support from fins and the swallow tail. It's your business how you use them, they are here!
Jumpturn, we failed to ski together last year
as there was a storm at Mt.Cannon.
I hope - no: I pray - to meet you at your home or somewhere in NH or VT from Mar 13 to Mar 23.
That`s much better than any video.

ummm....okay. turning this one into a lil....lil cybersex thing are ya? gonna...gonna type one-handed for a while? yeah? setting the.....the scene? just....gettin sexy in a steep and narrow chute with his Gotamas there? (nod to Stewie)
honestly though, this thread is fantastic. Tom has some real gems in here! The ski it's self is embarrassing if it's real. The turns looks so swishy it looks like you have to be gay to use them effectively.
gems:
I broke my leg last week so someone has to demo these things in NH for the good of the world.
Thank you Tom from Austria. You are a hero.thats new hampshire as fuck

Sure, no problem. They're short couloirs and he's a specialist. I don't think he has mowed down many tourists on the piste so far!
Maybe you can talk VT team huckalot into a media frenzy on Mont Washington's Diagonal Gully, which would perfectly match the requirements for insane straight lining if it weren't so wide! It's a nice 5 km skin up there and there are some 40m double tap hucking options at the exit, where the LAX ski will surely excel.
Not quite to ski god status ... perhaps on a deep pow day!

I have a question Tom. How do the rax perform skinning? Say mounted with Freeride+.

I'll do it as long as Sam goes first! We probably want to wait for some icy conditions so we can see just what the tail fins can do.
Tom do you plan on having any blem sales? I need a ski for a certain day in mid april, yours would be just perfect. Something in a neon color to match my outfit would be great!
I'm also interested in just the metal fins. I have been having some tail grip issues with my 200cm Igneous FFF's and I think adding the fin to the back could really help.
Thanks!Last edited by allenataylor; 03-04-2009 at 08:07 AM.

No, he is just taking this photo. See the shadow in the left lower corner.
Like such skiing ? Melting snow in all depths. 50 to 60 degrees on the left side of the pic. No skidding on edge possible. Jump turns hit the rock bottom.
Exit to hell at the lower rim.
That's fat Rax ski paradise.Last edited by Tom from Austria; 03-04-2009 at 10:50 AM.
