how to make my XL diamirs XS's? (kids AT bindings)

Got the idea from this thread
    http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...d.php?t=147812
and tried to make some kids AT bindings.

This is making an XL binding into a kids size. I don't think this will work for a medium to small, or anyother combo. Please feel free to try, but don't blame me if you screw something up that can't be fixed

Remove the T10 screw on from the cap at the end of the rail (Torx head, show with small tool in place)

remove the T10 screw from the bottom of the heel, nearest the back of the bindings

remove both the cap (it has a long screw attached to it) and the heel.

Then cut the rail, just past the 70 mm long hole for adjusting the boot size. You are cutting off 110mm off the bindings rails. This makes a 330-360mm XL go to 220-250mm.

file, sand and smooth the edges etc

Drill a new hole for the end cap, 10mm from the back of the rail, on center

drill a new hole for the start of boot size adjustment rail (20 mm from the cap screw) and one more 65mm towards the toe (adjustment is 70mm in total)

Cut, drill, file, etc the rest of the 7cm long rail to adjust the boot size.

    Re-attach.

Took me 30 minutes for a single binding, Not pretty, but it worked.

The last pics shows a 270 garmont, that is TOO BIG for the binding. I dont think that this Mod will work if you leave some of the rail hole intact? not sure, but again this will make a TINY AT binding, that NO ADULT boot can fit (265mm is about the smallest adult boot, AT or downhill)

so I am guessing the reason you can go XL to kid size but maybe not just down one size IS becuz you are cutting off SO MUCH rail you cut away the existing slot milled in the bar from the factory and whatever problems leaving any of that slot may bring up??

    nice job

thansk, ya, I had to remove that much (I think) to get a end point to the adjustment bar.

I have a few extra, XL diamirs, and that size is a VERY hard to sell.

So anyone, with kids, want to be a tester?

Not to knock your work or anything - but if anybody else is trying to do this, it is really easy with Naxos... I even considered that you could make custom size Naxos for any boot you wanted to stiffen them up.

Its really easy with Silvrettes too. I made a thread somewhere. Actually my daughter just took a tour yesterday on hers (mounted on chopped Explosives). Hey mtnlion, I'd be willing to let my daughter "test them" but not interested in buying them....

What is Jr Kya's boot size (or boot sole length?) this only fits VERY small, not adult, sized boots.

Awesome. I've been trying to think of wake to may some lil kid AT binders for the last few months. I've got a few kids skis at my disposal and was also thinking of a skin system using leftovers from trimming.

Solid work Mntlion. I really do think there is a market for this as I have seen many a family up at glacier park in the early summer.

I think that there are a lot of parents out there that would love to get their kids out touring in mellow terrain with them. I know I'm gonna be taking our little guy out very soon.

He's still pretty little though. He loves to ski but isn't even two yet (one more month). His BSL is still a little to small at 203. But that's why we have the lil Karhus still. (Although they do suck for actual skiing)

To back mntlion up on this, I have rocked XL Diamir Titanal II's for years that were modified to be a medium and I have NEVER pre-released, NEVER broken a pair, and NEVER been unhappy with my binding. They were modified by a good friend and Mag...Mr. Otter the Photog

People are so afraid of custom anything they forget that adventure is in experience not riding anothers wave.

Way to go mntlion and now I will prolly keep that pair forever so that my 11month old boy can have his first XXS pair thanks to your thread.

$265 for binders for a 3 year old? Might actually be worth it if they get him through the next few years of touring until I can get him proper tele gear...
