    I’m thinking the old one may be worth some cash, could only find two of them on the internet, both sold through auction houses.

    What the proponents of "free speech" (instead of the real thing) don't seem to get is that before social norms were enforced by governments and laws they were enforced by social pressure from the community. In every society, at every point in history. That is what is happening to the 6 delisted Seuss books. The voice of a significant portion of the community has been heard and has been accepted by the trustees. It is still perfectly legal if someone wants to draw pictures of "slant-eyed chinamen" and Africans with grass skirts--they have the free-speech right to do that, just as every publisher to whom they submit their drawings has the right to turn them down, and they shouldn't be surprised if other people get mad at them and make fun of them and refuse to have anything to do with them.

    What the people who scream "free speech" these days are really upset about is not that they don't have the right to express their views--because they do--but that other people don't want to listen to them, which they don't. And those people who want to end the immunity from liability enjoyed by social media (a position I support btw) will be very unhappy with the result if they get their way--because it will become much harder for them to spew their vile lies out into the world if social media are held accountable for publishing them.

    To put my point more simply--there is a right to free speech but there is no right to be heard. (Hence the ignore button.)

    It’s private property rights that lets them not publish.
    I’m ok with their rights. Just sad they would self censor.

    The eBay ban is more disturbing to me.
    Again. Free market. But wtf. Ebay is so pervasive for reselling.
    If a product is legal, it should be alllowed on eBay no matter how offensive.

    <shrug> well, ebay is a private nongovernmental entity, they can let people resell whatever the fuck they want unless you want the govt to step in and tell them what they must sell, and so forth. Don't like it, follow parler's lead and start kkkbay or whatever.

    So, you don’t believe in private property rights?

    As in, I do not have the right to sell from my store products of my choice. Rather the government will determine what is legal and I must sell all legal items?

    Do you hate Liberty?

    I'd still purchase Cat in the Hat for a friend's kid, same as I would buy James and the Giant Peach (Dahl has now been outed as a pretty notorious anti-semite). So, Suess and Dahl aren't gods, but men like us and fallible.

    These six books are getting a lot of attention right now, and it's hard to imagine the portrayal of the Chinese in Mullberry st running to print right now. Would Zelig get made with the opium scene? Blazing Saddles? Everything is a product of its time and it is fair to examine it, keep it, chuck it, whatever. I think all of the above have merit and should be kept, other people will feel differently.

    It doesn't mean the body of work is being erased. Removing a book from a curriculum to replace it with another is not the same as burning it. And I was a little surprised to see that he had also made cartoons like this which were surely used as propaganda to drum up support for concentration camps of Asian Americans, one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century:

    Like I said, shit is complicated, so flying off the handle at every poorly researched outrage porn piece on FauxNews isn't going to do any good, even if they get a lot of clicks for it.

    quite the propaganda cartoon

    Huh? I always use chopsticks. Otherwise I scarf down my Chinese food too fast. No self control.
    And for those who have ever stapled skin--I can use two pairs of skin forceps in my left hand--like chopsticks--to hold the skin edges together, while I staple with my right. That way I don't need an assistant to close skin. I'm right handed but no trouble using the forceps with my left hand. No one else I know can do that. Can you?

    they usually don't let me operate anything but chopsticks or the odd roach clip but i am up to speed on taking staples out with the diagonal cutters & roach clips

    the real reason most white people can't manage chopsticks IS they suck for using with plates

    whenever i go for chinese food I ask them to take away the plates and bring me 3 bowls ... way easier

    My AZN mother was the worst at eating chinese food, she would just put the bowl up to her mouth and shovel it in coolie style, the noises she made were embarrassing but you don't say that to the matriarch of the family

    Why do you and so many righties keep thinking that these private businesses are your own personal free speech realms. Its like you’re too stupid to even understand the political positions that you claim.

    Twitter = private business
    Facebook = private business
    dr Seuss publisher = private business
    Mr Potato head = private business
    Ebay = private business

    And why the fuck would you care about whether some old kids book with pictures of goofy “chinamen” are discontinued. Was there some great value lost?

    No just some excuse to be butthurt. Basically all there is left of conservativism is pseudo christian religiofacism and culture of butthurt whining.

    yup, not many book burnings from the left that i know of. and how about the burning of witches?

    glad to see bongwater didn't make the list. they were a fine, fine - and very funny - band. saw 'em at CBGB a 'few' years back. david byrne was in the crowd a few feet from us.

    anal cunt otoh: saw them open for the boredoms, but got a real sense of who they were when they headlined a smaller show (downstairs while i saw another band in main room) later. they were racist, sexist (duh) scumbags with a nazi blackshirt wannabe crowd about 20 years before that got all mainstream.

    If I ever find myself on a chairlift next to a guy who does stupid ass false equivalency statements comparing private enterprise decisions to not publish offensive content to the mutha fucking holocaust genocide....well, that person is going to end up getting some scratched tails on the unload ramp.

    Speaking of 'unload', did you know that *Core Shot* is in reference to the fact that he likes it when Don Jr does pencil dick jizz shots on his stomach.

    Pepe Le Pew is next?
    Aww snap
    Speedy Gonzalez? Shit, that seemed racist 40 years ago.

    Charles M. Blow made his critical comments in an article titled 'Six Seuss Books Bore a Bias' published in the Grey Lady in the wake of news that certain beloved Dr. Suess children's books were getting 'cancelled' for racist depictions.

    In the article, Blow wrote: 'Some of the first cartoons I can remember included Pepé Le Pew, who normalized rape culture; Speedy Gonzales, whose friends helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans
    PS. I’m not such a dick irl.

    PPS Mfc, sorry about the grandfolks. Glad they escaped hitler. Too many did not.
