you've already been told that your sources of information are incredibly suspect, but this one is so easily debunked as to boggle the mind. I just went to ebay and searched for "mulberry" in the books section (as "to think I saw it on Mulberry Street" is one of the 6, not 3, books that the publisher has decided not to publish) and there were literally hundreds of copies for sale.

Yes, the USA is getting interesting in a surreal creepy way, but it's because a large segment of the population will ignore facts and instead believe what their conspiracy theory sources feed them. FFS.

Dr Suess wrote some amazing classics, but there is nothing wrong with taking a closer look at someone's legacy. Life is complicated and people make mistakes. What is wrong with taking in the full picture of someone's work to get an accurate picture of who they were?

I'd still purchase Cat in the Hat for a friend's kid, same as I would buy James and the Giant Peach (Dahl has now been outed as a pretty notorious anti-semite). So, Suess and Dahl aren't gods, but men like us and fallible.

These six books are getting a lot of attention right now, and it's hard to imagine the portrayal of the Chinese in Mullberry st running to print right now. Would Zelig get made with the opium scene? Blazing Saddles? Everything is a product of its time and it is fair to examine it, keep it, chuck it, whatever. I think all of the above have merit and should be kept, other people will feel differently.

It doesn't mean the body of work is being erased. Removing a book from a curriculum to replace it with another is not the same as burning it. And I was a little surprised to see that he had also made cartoons like this which were surely used as propaganda to drum up support for concentration camps of Asian Americans, one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century:

Like I said, shit is complicated, so flying off the handle at every poorly researched outrage porn piece on FauxNews isn't going to do any good, even if they get a lot of clicks for it.

I know. All these private property owners exerting their private property rights must be sending the right into a tail spin. I mean, where the fuck is the government over reach to protect all you snowflakes?

Wait, took you 3 seconds of research to demolish MTT’s bullshit? That’s a full second longer than it usually takes.

Btw I hope readers of this thread know that ‘Seuss’ rhymes with ‘choice’. Maybe that was already covered.

    That fake news WSJ

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/dr-seus...ay-11614884201

Online marketplace eBay Inc. said it is working to prevent the resale of six Dr. Seuss books that were pulled earlier this week by the company in charge of the late author’s works because they contain offensive imagery.

“EBay is currently sweeping our marketplace to remove these items,” a spokeswoman for the company said in an email. New copies of the six books were no longer for sale online at major retailers such as Barnes & Noble on Thursday afternoon, which put eBay among the most prominent platforms for the books to be sold.

Hundreds of listings for the six books could be found on the platform as of Thursday morning, though the number appeared to be lower than it was on Wednesday evening. The eBay spokeswoman said that it would take some time to review seller listings and that the company was monitoring newly published listings.

I'll eat some crow for that being in a legit news outlet (didn't actually read it because WSJ is paywalled).

Although there are still hundreds and hundreds of them on ebay, if not thousands, and it's not like people are doing it by hiding what they are selling.

I'll also say that I think it would be/is bullshit for ebay to ban the sale of the book. If someone bought the book they own it, so why shouldn't they be able to resell?

The only thing that would be problematic is if the publisher sought to recall the book from retailers as per whatever agreement they have between each other, and those retailers didn't return them and instead tried to profit off this situation by selling their stock on ebay. That assumes, of course, that there IS something in the agreement that prohibits a retailer from doing that, in which case selling them on ebay would be like selling stolen goods, sort of.

Not sure what is wrong with On Beyond Zebra. Haven't been able to find an article that mentions it but I think it might be the alphabet itself. I don't think I have a copy of the book anymore but I might as I have an extensive collection of children's books.

Judith and Neil Morgan, Geisel's biographers, note that most of the letters resemble elaborate monograms, "perhaps in Old Persian".[2]
I like the way you roll...shelves full of great kids books and wine. What's not to like.

I am really bummed by this news. We had a nearly complete Dr. S collection prior to the fire. As out kids are now grown, and no grand kids in sight I do not have a real reason to repurchase them, other then I still love them. I can still quote long passages of Green Eggs and Ham.

Just an aside, but my kids grew up on a steady diet of Dr. S, and they are amazingly tolerant of all diversity.

It is hilarious how outraged the right wingers are by this. Had they ever read any Suess they would quickly realize he was an extreme lefty, and I suspect many of his books have actually been banned in parts of the country in the past.

The fact that the foundation owning the rights to these books elected to no longer publish them is lost on their small minds.

Personally I have no objection to racist writings, as they can be great teaching oppurtunities. I have read Huck Fin and Tom Sawyer many times and will continue to do so as they teach us a lot about tolerance and injustice (if you actually think about what you read.) Suess is no different.

The left is banning Seuss. Why is it that right wingers are for free speech?
Not that long ago the left was for free speech. Bruce. Ginsberg. Carlin. Etc.

Can’t we unite left and right in the idea that cancel culture leads to no cultural history?

First they came for aunt jemima and I said nothing.

Then they came for uncle Ben and I said nothing

And they came for mr potato head and I said nothing

They came for dr Seuss and again I said nothing

Then they came for me. And I confessed my racist white privellege and promised to suck politically correct dick.

There’s a big difference between kneeling down and bending over. #Zappa

If he thinks that because of his racist white privilege that he needs to suck a politically correct dick, I'm down with that.
