Strong storms here in the NEK of Vermont yesterday evening. Strong winds (lots of downed trees), heavy rain, and crazy lightning.

Tim, is there a specific technique you used to get the full lightning arc in those shots? They look great!
Nobody listens to a fkn word fat chicks say. Nobody talks to them long enough to notice they're crazy

Thanks I was trying lots of different things while I was out there. Luckily is was getting dark so I could run the shutter open for a long time (15-30 seconds). Earlier in the evening, when the sky was still rather light, I set the f stop around f10 to keep from over-exposing the sky. As it got darker I decreased to f4-f6. The lightning bolts are bright enough that they show up well anywhere in that range.
Going wide angle 12-16mm didn't yield very many keepers. The lightning was too far away to make it a significant part of a wide angle image. Had the storm been closer it may have worked out but I would guess that it is pretty rare to be close enough to a storm to get a good shot and not get drenched with rain or actually be in danger of getting struck by the lightning you are trying to photograph.

just finished up 5 days of this. I had never done an overnight raft trip before. at first 5 days/nights sounded like a lot. it went by way too fast and now I'm itching for more.

Totally new to photography so I was pretty stoked to catch the northern lights and the milky way on a camping trip this weekend. Feel free to critique.

    Nice man! Those are great.

If I were to nit pick them, I'd say they'd be helped by finding a way to get some detail into the foreground. Either with a big flashlight of some kind, or taking a second exposure with a longer shutter speed and stitching them together.

Thanks, I messed around with "painting" the foreground with a headlamp but they turned out weird. I'll have to read up on that and try again.
