Smoke filtered sun shots are pretty sweet. You can really pick up some interesting details on the sun (sunspots, etc) with a 200mm+ lens.
Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

Thanks. It's been a great summer. The 5-year-old in the pictures is having an epic summer.

Thanks! It's Lake Powell on the Utah/Arizona border. Think of the Grand Canyon with 300 feet of water in it, and you're getting close to what it's like there.

So I tried painting the foreground with a headlamp on this camping trip. It probably wasn't late enough at night to get the bulk of the milky way in the shot:

Solar Storms have been firing the last few days. Last night, it cleared out here just enough to catch a bit of the show. However, the sky clearing came after the moon had already risen, washing out a lot of the aurora.

The smoke has made the sun more view-able at the horizon. Images taken at sunrise/sunset on the same day show how they rotate (or we rotate?).

Never knew you could see sunspots through the smoke haze. Awesome.
