With no new snow in the mountains for weeks and a desire to see Arches National Park, I took off for a solo trip to Utah this week. I've only gone through and processed few of the pictures, but here is a little taste.
I should have brought the tripod up, but I rolled into the park right at the golden hour and didn't want to dick around with it. I sort of regret that now, but I brought it out the next night, so take it for what it is. Self portrait in the North Window arch.
and Delicate arch. I didn't make the trip to the traditional spot because you aren't allowed to bring dogs.

UFC Lawyer - is that your wife? She looks like she could be the sister of one of my friend's wives.

I keep coming back to this pic and screwing around with it. I think I finally have a version I can live with.

You can also see some of the nebulosity just above/left Orion Nebula, which is Running Man Nebula, and around the lowest star of Orion's belt (about 10 o'clock from Orion), which is Horsehead and Flame Nebulae (you can make out Flame quite clearly to the left side of the star) -- great capture. Just a little white balance adjustment to make the sky more blue/black would be nicer.

Was out at the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge yesterday. Tried some new metering techniques but not terribly successful. ETTR seems to greatly emphasize chromatic aberration...
Also, finally got a copy of Lightroom - my sister's family pooled their Xmas money and got me LR3. I suck at it. I have not been able to get anywhere near the results out of it that I was getting with camera jpegs and an old copy of Photoshop 5.5 OR using UFRaw for initial fine-tuning the .NEFs then outputting as .tif for work in Photoshop 5.5. Especially sharpening. The sharpening algorithms are way different in LR than in the old Photoshop and I can't seem to get as good of results. Another issue is the lens correction profiles don't seem to be nearly as effective in LR as what Nikon has embedded in the camera. Hardly any CA in the camera jpegs but the raw files have horrible CA that the lens profiles in lightroom don't seem to have any effect on. (shooting RAW + Jpeg for now 'til I get the hang of this).
I hope I'm just up against a learning curve here. Seems everyone loves Lightroom - I expected to love it too....Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain...

Middle of January and we have a grass fire that burns close to a section of land today.

So before the fire today, my son and I went up to Hyalite where at least we have some snow. Got set up and the wind started going in circles. I'm really hoping to catch the kids kiting this winter but so far mother nature is not cooperating here in Montana.

Had been neglecting my 16-35, so took it to the hill yesterday with some friends; forgot how interesting it can be:
