what, no pictures all day today?

More J-tree stoke, you like? I need to get something besides a bluish LED headlamp for light painting. I remember BD used to make a hybrid LED/incandescent headlamp you could switch between. Then I wouldn't get such crazy color temp contrasts. Then again, I'm kind of digging the background redshift in this photo.

nice. also from the land of the joshua tree (though we camped about 500' vert above them). why is tgr editing my picture. it looks like SHIT now!

ok, so TGR is just resizing it. the uploaded picture in it's original size has nowhere near as much color as when i view it locally.
actually, it looks hugely different in firefox and ie and chrome. what's up with that?

That's one reason to host images yourself, so you know that there is no secondary compression. Except when there is no compression then you have to choose your initial JPG compression very well, because you don't want everyone downloading 1MB every time they look at your photo otherwise you pay through the nose!

Anyways, yeah free image hosting sites that re-compress will kill your color depth and sharpness - but you can't blame them for underexposing (bump your ISO and use your histograms)

Good lord man, those are SHARP! Awesome focus and very well done ... always seems so hard with a long lens and a quick cruising raptor. Are those sharp-shinned hawks?

it is self hosted. on ie it just looks ridiculously dark. on firefox it looks like someone laid 10% opacity grey layer over it. chrome is the closest, but still darker than the original.

edit- i just did a save for web instead of a regular save and now it is slighly darker than when i view it locally, but all three browsers are the same and better than before (i think chrome looks the same, but it was the closest anyway)

Yosemite a month ago ... wasn't really that sharp nor was there much dynamic range, but I liked the texture and composition so I figured the B&W ought to do the image well.

Every time mtcham posts these days I get a serious case of lens envy. That 500mm is just killing it, I want one so bad.

Found out that Nikon made a very nice 500mm with manual focus back in the late '80s. Seeing as it's not an AF or VR lens and is an F4 it's about the most compact and lightweight 500mm prime with excellent iq going for Nikon. Still, good used examples are in the very low $2K price range and I'd need a really good tripod and gimbal mount to make use of it. That's about the best price out there for a 500mm prime but given my employment situtaion I just can't figure a way to swing it.

Looked into the Sigma 50-500 briefly, but every 100% crop shot I've seen from it looks pretty 'meh' despite all the people gushing over how "sharp" it is.

Oh well, someday. Gives me something to work towards.

mtcham, that's a really neat capture.

This 365 thing is kinda challenging. And I'm only 2 weeks in. Part of it for me, was starting a few days after a new baby. So my ability to sneak away at prime light time is non-existant. Here's a couple from today and yesterday
