The bar is sweet. The terrain is not bad. If it snows a lot you can ski 2000+ feet of powder and glades.
South facing aspect can make it weird in the spring. Up to 500 feet of icy moguls where all the runs come together after all that turning and burning thru the trees fucking hurts.

I think Snowbowl might have the distinction of being the southernmost ski area with a primarily south facing aspect.
That affects the snow quality, but that's kind of a different argument than the actual terrain.

^This. Although, yeah, one could argue terrain implies aspect, but I'll make that distinction.

I always had a blast at Snowbowl bitd, when it dumps, it's as good as anywhere. Condolences for the mgmt., have a bloody mary (they were legendary in the 70s).

This is both the best and worst part of the Bowl.

But that requires competence and tact far beyond what the bowl is currently capable of.
It's easier to expand into FS land for an existing area than it is to build a new one. See lookout's st. regis expansion(which probably moves the terrain available above that of snowbowl, now that near side country of st. regis, the shoulder, becomes super lappable).

    Definitely.

Which is why I'm glad it's foggy there 99.5% of the time. In my experience, Snowbowl gets a lot more sun. Although the snow staying better at Big Mtn. doesn't really make up for the generally meh-ish terrain.

Sure. I just get less excited about good terrain when the snow quality is frequently a crusty mess. But to be sure, on a storm day, Snowbowl has some of the best skiing in the state.

Not sure if there is a disconnect here, but there is literally no additional Forest Service land around Snowbowl that is both developable and higher elevation that Lavelle.

This. Onto the reservation is kinda their only option for expansion.

Big morning at Lost Trail. This is presumably with a ski cut (only other option is a natural). I bet someone had to change their pants.

    1. Old slow chairlifts, they stop when the power in Missoula goes out!

    2. Penny pinching ownership lacking in warm fuzzies, strangely, they won't kiss ass when people complain.

    3. Runs not mowed to the ground every year, they should be skiable once the first flake falls!

    4. Mija made me put a leash on my snowboard

    5. Stupidly premature claims that the new lift will be running (though a curmudgeonly ski instructor buddy thinks it might be this weekend).

    6. The mountain isn't high enough elevation, or is facing the wrong direction.

    7. They wouldn't let me on the lift after passing a school bus on the road!

This response is stipulated in Rasputin's Snowbowl contract guaranteeing free hot chocolates from the bar.

And just to be clear, Rasputin is still contractually bound by the agreement, even when the hot chocolate machine breaks down. Which it does regularly.

They have two now so there is hot chocolate at least 50% of the time.

That's nice. I heard they were installing a 2nd hot chocolate machine, but last I heard it was taking an improbably long time to actually get it up and running.

Lapped all the runs today on the Snowpark chair today. It's nice to see some new terrain, and it's definitely going to spread folks out on the mountain (huge plus). It's low angle, glade skipping laced with lots of woody hazards.... Best be on your A-game when "maching" through said glades.

And yeah, what 406 said! I wacked my helmet off the halo on Tower 2. Someone is going to scalp themselves on the 2 big bolts. Otherwise it was fun.
