I was just up there yesterday on my bike, and considered going up tv mtn but didn't have enough daylight left. Maybe I'll go to point 6 this weekend and check it out.

So is Snowbowl putting this lift in by themselves, with Pat in charge? Or did they hire it out? They must have some sort of consultant up there at least, I would think.

Ha. Yeah I'd assume you would need some sort of an engineering firm to determine how and where to place the footings and towers. Or maybe all that's in the instruction book that comes with the chair.

I know nothing about chairlifts but it seems like it should be done for this season.

Pat is just watching a youtube video on how to install, loser of the bet should have to ride the chair soon after it opens...I might wait a season :-)

Kind of hope they don't get it open, low angle but might be fun skinning around over there at xmas.

Have heard mixed feelings on the new chair, definitely some negativity towards increasing traffic on TV mountain.

Don't put too much faith in the engineers. I've seen a tower get shortened because someone (probably several someones) apparently forgot to account for the footing height above ground level in calculating tower height, and when they went to put the cable up they realized things weren't quite right.

I didn't ride that chair the day it opened, but as far as I know that tower is just fine (and it should be—a proper weld should be as strong or stronger than the rest of it).

Moved from Bozeman to Missoula about a month ago for work, school me on skiing in the Missoula vicinity. Worth getting a pass to snowbowl? How do I infiltrate the zootown backcountry community ? Spots I should know about?

There's a nice snowfield in the Missions right now. Would be a steep hike, but you could make the top hiking boots.
Was working up in Ronan for over a week and kept driving past it.

If you can get away from work and ski during the week, Bowl pass is worth it. I mean, it's still overpriced as hell and it certainly isn't Bozeman. Good skiing when it snows a lot. Probably easy to find backcountry partners if you're better at backcountry and making friends than I am. Back/slack/side country is all pretty easily Googleable.

That is up on McDonald Peak. I think the tribe has that climb closed right now for the annual ladybug hatch. You don't want to be up there right now. Probably 20 or 30 Grizzlies up there feasting on ladybugs. Not making this up, one Griz with a radio collar has made the trek from the Cabinets to McDonald Peak every year for the past 10 years.

I tend to think there is about a fifty percent chance of the new lift spinning this season. Having worked with Pat a bit over the years, I have found him to not be the incompetent person that many like to believe, but actually very knowledgeable on many subjects pertinent to his job. I think people who haven't installed chairlifts seem to think it's an easy thing to do.

The lift will get done when it gets done, and many of us who know TV Mountain are ambivalent, it will be sad to see mogul runs where there were powder stashes before, but holy shit, there is some awesome terrain that will further cement the Bowl as the real deal for advanced to expert skiers.
