Props to Jano for lining this one up... he does such a killer job spreading good vibes and organizing the whole deal with his awesome crew that the taos comp itself seems like a different sport. you always leave feeling a positive charge.

Any front range or summit mags headed down that want someone to split the cost of gas and/or lodging? I'll probably be at the Snowmansion, but thought I'd check if anyone needs a ride, or has extra space.

FYI: Every time Alka drops the name of his bad-ass skier super smoking hottie girlfriend without posting a pic (at least of her skiing), everybody gets to kick him in the nuts.
Yes, everybody. Just once, but everybody.

What the hell have I done this year to indicate anything regarding any sort of likelihood of that? I'm not trying to win the fucker; just maaaaaybe make the second day. If I have to huck a 50-ft. backflip to a hard, flat landing for that, then my spot's for sale...
Gettin' psyched. Particularly with those photos there. Wowza!"I said flotation is groovy"

an update from taos.
everything is open except the peak. There was a massive slide in the K's (skiers L side of the main line down Kachina peak) a few weeks ago and it's just starting to fill in. It should be good by the time you fools make it down here. Divegirl/lego had a TR that showed her smiling in front of Kachina Peak. You can see the crown.
West Basin was on yesterday. The suncrust that plagues it was mostly buried (except in the sunniest parts). First day i've been there this season that some of the more rowdy lines have been getting skied. Bamboo had a few tracks on it same with Turbinator. Someone also hucked Bamboo nose. They need some more snow to really fill in but people have been throwing them down anyway.
I'm psyched to see the knuckle draggers. Rumor is that all the local businesses and TSV themselves had a great holiday season with the snowboard ban lifted. Only a few guys hiking the ridge with a snowboard, and even less headed out to West Basin (all the sidestepping and traverssing has gotta suck on a board). The Christmas Crew def brought a bunch of texan snowboarders, but it's fine b/c they stay on the groomers and they left their money before heading back to Dallas.
Coverage is good, 80" base or something which is right around when the mountain starts skiing really well. Forecast is pretty bleak right now, but we have confidence it'll start snowing again soon. The 2" snow report yesterday was easy a foot in Treskow and other favored locations. No liftlines (like zero) no clouds (like zero) but lots of untracked (like tons).
For those of you coming down (for the comp or anytime) send me a PM before you and I'd be happy to show you around. I mostly keep 'em on the snow unless it's soft these days but I'd be happy to watch you huck yer meat!"At least if the species has lost it's animal strength, individual members can have the fun of finding it again..."

So how much are those landings gonna hurt later this week? Forecasts for 50 degrees and sunny at 10000 ft. make me a bit... uneasy.
Anyone wanna give the scuttlebutt on where the qualifier-day venue is?"I said flotation is groovy"

Quite a bit. I haven't been up there in 3 weeks, but my brother lives up there and is saying that everything is starting to get pretty ugly, between the warm/sunny days, the wind scouring, and the lack of any new snow for a while. Even 3 weeks ago when I was there, everything that got direct sun was getting baked over. They have had a little bit of fresh since then, but not a whole lot. There is a chance of a little bit of fresh on Wednesday or Thursday, but probably not enough to really do much if anything. The top section of Kachina has supposedly been decent mid morning right as it softens up. Regardless, I will be up there working/watching Friday and Saturday. Best of luck to all of you that do come out.
As for the qualifiers, I believe that they will be in the same portion of West Basin that was used in previous years.

Coo. I'm stoked, considering my shin bang just woke me up in the middle of the night. It could be a slow run for young Maxwell on Thursday...
Thanks for the info."I said flotation is groovy"

Hit Taos this weekend.
Conditions rhyme with Anus
That's right: HAINUS Edit: "heinous"
Think a whole mtn. of frozen corn. To anyone heading there to compete, double up on pads and keep your skis on the ground.

More reports of dismal conditions... Yay!
the report is of "slider conditions"
if you fall, you slide to the bottom... because it's a sheet of ice.
We should be there by mid day tomorrow to take a look at the venue.Last edited by grskier; 03-03-2009 at 12:39 PM.
