Life Magazine @ Google: Skiing
I'm just a simple girl trying to make my way in the universe...
I come up hard, baby but now I'm cool I didn't make it, sugar playin' by the rules
If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.

Sorry about the quality, but here is a picture of a framed original of my grandfather that was in Life Magazine in 1938. The photo was taken the afternoon of his first day when he arrived in North Conway NH to begin his ski school in America. This was one of his first turns at Mt. Cranmore.

I just watched some 1940 era USFD PSA/documentary film called The Snow Ranger the other night. It was full of all kinds of similar "cool shit" with folks ripping the groomers and BC at a ton of resorts across the West (many of which are long gone).

Anyone know the story behind this lift design? It must have run super-slow to be able to space the chairs so closely. Also why the tracked design (as opposed to hanging the chairs from cables). As far as I know, the first chairs used cables, so why use something this inefficient when an efficient design was already available?

The novelty factor, maybe?
People experimented with a lot of different ways to get people up the hill mechanically in the early dys of lift design. Maybe this was just one of those evolutionary dead ends in the history of lift technology. I think this particular lift was designed and built by some clever, grumpy, bullheaded, iconoclastic engineer who wanted to do his own thing.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say the were the parents of all the maggots today.
I found this one and my first thought was "Hey, look, it's the Coloraggots."
