I know this is a scam but how does it play out?
Morning, I'm looking to buy it for someone but I will not be able to meet with cash due to my schedule between work. I can mail you a certified check and have my mover pick it up after the check clears, that way you'll have your money before releasing it. If that's okay with you please email me your name, mailing address, contact number and I'll overnight the check tomorrow morning. You should also confirm the price so we're both on the same page.

Basically they are making you think this is a cashier's check which is guaranteed to be payable from the date of the check issuance to its being cashed. A certified check is only certified that the check signature is real and the funds are available at that point in time in which it is certified.
They then would issue a stop payment claiming it was lost and a golly gee I don't know what happened to it. That often takes some time for the banks to sort out, which while doing so, they would have their mover pick whatever the item is up and then you are shit out of luck.Live Free or Die

Came across a CL scammer for a freaking cat recently. Was inquiring about a kitten that was supposedly available for adoption. They came back with a poorly spelled request for my name and e-mail address. Obvious phishing attempt was obvious.
Sold a car a few weeks back. Got bombarded with the usual CL scam attempts. Offers w/ cashiers checks, saying they want the car right away, sight unseen, would pay more, blah blah blah. The usual tell was that they almost all said "I don't check my Craigslist e-mail, so please e-mail princeofnigeria@gmail.com." There is no such thing as "craigslist e-mail," so that's the first clue it's a scam. Always use the CL e-mail address since it keeps things anonymous.

Guaranteed if they send a cheque it will be for far more than the agreed price and they'll ask you to refund the difference before the cheque bounces.
To the OP: did you check that the link was genuine? Could've been a simple phishing trip.
EDIT: damn, caught by the super necro-post. 13 years has got to be a record.

how does this craigslist scam work?
Bump. FYI: New one I’m seeing that I don’t understand:
They respond to your add with no specific questions or information, just:
“I saw your ad. I want the item. Don’t reply to CL email. Email me at _______”
The email contact name doesn’t match the email address name… shit just looks questionable.

They want your email address? Mine's already on the dark web so I'm told and the horse is out of the barn.

Once they have your email they send you extortion attempts claiming to have your email (and sometimes a 10 year old password found on the dark web) claiming that they have evidence you search for porn and maybe even claim to have hacked your webcam for videos of you jacking off.. If I get that I ask them for links to porn sites I haven't found yet and thank them in advance for helping me find more porn..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon at work, got one of these this morning: "I want to buy it. are you the original owner and is it your final price? actually, I don't reply from cl mail. so, let me know at [email address with name that doesn't match the CL email name]"
Googling the phrase brings up several forums with people discussing this exact email. Once they have a live person on the other end, they run the old "I'm out of town but will send you a [fake] cashier check" scam.
