MAGGIE VALLEY – Cataloochee Ski Area will open for the season at 1 p.m. today, according to spokeswoman Tammy Brown. The temperature at the ski area now is 22 degrees, there is an inch of new snow on the ground and the skies are clearing.
Only the two beginner slopes will open - Beginners Easy Way and Beginners Rabbit Hill serviced by the Easy Way Triple Chairlift on a base of 8-12 inches and a machine made surface.
There will be two sessions of skiing today, twilight skiing from 1-10 p.m. and night skiing from 6-10 p.m. with an afternoon half day rate also available. Weekday and student rates will be in effect.
Be aware that due to such an early opening, there will be no food or beverage service at the area this week, so be prepared.

Isn't this 2 of the last 3 years they pulled this off? Props to them, they're two weeks behind A-basin and weeks ahead of Vermont, Maine, New Hampy and the Laurentians.
