aspen snowmass BC
I am primarily a BC skier but have a tradition of an annual ski weekend with college buddies who stay on the piste. This year the trip is to aspen/snowmass, someplace I have never skied before. Here are my questions:
- what is the least expensive way to get lift tickets? I mean damn this place is pricey!
- Can anyone recommend a good book for some tame BC routes? I will probably do a couple lift-service days with my friends but that will be all I could handle. I would like to earn a few turns there too but since my friends are not avi-savy they would have to be really safe routes for me to either go alone or drag them along.
Thanks in advance for your help

Probably the best deal you're going to get at Aspen is to buy a multi-day pass (a 4 of 5 day or something like that). You'll have a little flexibility on when you want to use those 4 days and it's a little cheaper than buying day passes.
For BC skiing, you should definitely not go alone, nor with people that don't have avy knowledge. Find people in the area and offer to buy them beers to take you out (hint: I live in the area and love beer!)

Buy Neil Beidelman's guide to the pistes, buy Lou Dawson's guide to the backcountry. Lose your friends for a day and let them slay the pistes while you go backcountry with a local.
Pick up rich / hot chicks at Sky Bar and get them to pay for your lift tickets."Buy the Fucking Plane Tickets!"

I recently moved to CO from Zurich. Last year the "college buddies" weekend was in Davos and this year it is in Snowmass, so I guess I am really luckin' out with not having to travel like all my other friends who are spread out all over the US.
I have never skied in UT, any suggestion on places when I finally make the trip?

Make sure you buy the classic pass by 11/16. Pay the extra $5 and have them add the RF chip.
When you coming?
Yeah, there's way more backcountry in Utah and no people either!

There's a crew of really strong skiers in Aspen. As long as your not a total dick, somebody will show you around.
Get the 7 day classic. If your smart you'll be coming up long before February!

Montezuma Basin has a lot of great backcountry skiing.

A good compromise for you and your buddies might be the Highlands Bowl, at Aspen Highlands, right? Or am I a complete loser for thinking thats anything worth mentioning, Its involves a boot pack annoying enough to keep 98% of the mountain away...
I was there two years ago and was finding untouched lines for a few days after the storm... Not trying to say that thats BC or anything

Have you been there in Feb.? Damn, are you trying to kill these dudes?
the cheapest way to ski Ajax is to hike up the backside and ski the top of the mtn. As long as you don't go to the bottom you can ride lifts all day for nada.
The areas near the two roads that access the top from the backside also have some pretty good, somewhat-mellow BC (with taxi rides back to town). Besides that, listen to Shred's advice.Last edited by Phatstix; 10-24-2008 at 06:27 PM.

Skin up Snowmass... ski the top half with your friends. Between High Alpine and the new sheer bliss lift you can get in some cool laps.
