Summer in the Gros Ventre, a photomentary
After spending eight summers working in the Wind River Range east of Pinedale, WY, I made a change this summer and headed north to Jackson to work as a backcountry ranger in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. I never had many nice things to say about the J-Hole because I knew it mostly through the traffic and crowds I experienced when running errands that couldn't be taken care of in Sublette County. I've changed my mind... I love this place!
The spring was wet and rainysnowy, which got depressing after a few weeks of nonstop cloudy skis and dampness. But the wildflowers were stunning.

The last snow fell on June 12, a good way to end the season with accumulation all the way down to the valley floor:
Still lots of good turns on Teton Pass
Even got in some lift-served at Targhee-- on the Solstice!!
I worked with the backpacking crew to begin the summer-- and during the course of my job got to see a lot of
and
and
and
Austin, partner in crime...uhh...fighting
Even got to work down low amongst the giant sage:
I skied a pretty line below 9 thousand feet in July
Mt McDougal
and jump off cliffs into Phelps lake
Since mid-August, I've spent most of my time in the backcountry with some amazing horses.
Sometimes they can act like 1000 pound terrorists:
But they're nothing but a precious bunch of Mountain loving companions
Kansas and I
Budweiser
Will
Kidd
And they even love snow!!
Lakota

On some days off in late August, I got to visit my old beat:
The Cirque of the Towers
Deep Lake
Mt Mitchell
One more from the cirque
Now, it's fall, the leaves are almost finished changing, and the first big snow has fallen. It's been a pleasure working in country where it's common to go a week without seeing another person. Living in Jackson ain't so bad, especially with a bike and easy access to Crystal Butte and the Gros Ventre Wilderness. How can you complain when this is the view from your backyard?

Thanks for sharing a little bit of my summer with me!
Super Ranger, beeotches, don't you forget it!

Powder snow skiing is not fun. It’s life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality. What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Once experienced, this kind of living is recognized as the only way to live–fully aware of the earth and the sky and the gods and you, the mortal, playing among them. Dolores LaChapelle

And one final thing: God Save Wyoming!!!Skiing, whether you're in Wisconsin or the Alps, is a dumbass hick country sport that takes place in the middle of winter on a mountain at the end of a dirt road.
