that photo was from Swiss Valley in Jones, Michigan from the winter before last. Now that I'm here in MN, I've just gone to Afton Alps a few times with friends (read: skied in bounds on groomers with well-meaning gapers.) One of these days I'd like to make it up to Lutsen. I hear that's pretty decent.

Lutsen is okay, only been up there in the spring though because it stays open into April. Nothing is real great, but I prefer Welch over Afton, probably about 20 minutes farther for you.

Since I don't own a car, the only time I get out to the hill is when my buddies go. I've been trying like a mad man to find a bus that runs to one of the smaller ones in the suburbs, although I might stick out just a big in all my gear with the sticks in hand on a public bus. Probably look even cooler covered in snow on the way back.

Now that's about the most discrete move to check for "freshness" that I've seen in a while!
