If you look back at years past it's not that great and actually much closer than many of the "classic" F1 eras.

    Fastest qualifying time was 1:35.246
    Slowest was 1:38.443
    Difference 3.2 seconds or <4% or <10mph at 200mph
Not a big speed difference, more equivalent to activating DRS. I don't think folks realize how good even the worst F1 driver is.

Obs 1 - All you canadians must be proud of your boy Lafiti for being the kingmaker. LOL

Obs 2 - Perez's masterclass defensive play against hamilton was worth the price of admission.

^ Yeah, that race was 2 on 1, and Hamilton still pulled it off*

I think you're looking at last year on old format track.

    Pole was 1:22.109
    20th on Grid 1:25.685

    But yep similar.

Take as a for instance (picked at random)

    1986 British GP

    Pole 1:07.690
    20th 1:12.848

Considerably bigger over a far shorter lap

And the gap to the last car on the 26 car grid was +11.738

the story is more told by the final classification of that race. A little more than a third were classified at the end of the race (9 of 26) and only 2 were unlapped. Some drivers only completed 1 race of the 15/16 they were in that season

compare to 2021 Saudi Arabia were 3/4 finished the race and 12 were on the first lap. Not just faster, but far more reliably fast.

Yep, and it was a pretty high attrition rate for a 2021 race too..

It wasn't. If it stayed yellow it would have been. Going green, it was decided by racing on the track

Agreed. Ending the race under a SC would have been a joke and a gift to LH. Letting him and MV race was the right call. Mercedes kept LH out on old tires. That was the wrong call. It worked for them in Jeddah but not this time. That's racing.

    What a race.

I'm sure when everyone and everything is safely out of Saudi the full story of the events on Friday night will come out. Wouldn't surprise me if that's the last Saudi Grand Prix. Which would be good for many reasons including that the track is just too dangerous.

Watching the first F1 in Miami. Mixed feelings about the track. I think it would have been much better as a city street track, but the announcers seem to be impressed with the track so far. Tomorrow should be interesting with all the cars on the track at the same time.

3 DRS zones should make for some passing. I hope LH has a good run.

F1 still interesting. Rooting for Alonso. Surely they practiced today at Silverstone?

I have a love/hate relationship with F1. This guy was a big part of developing it:

"I'd still take a bullet for him," Ecclestone told the show. "I'd rather it didn't hurt, but if it does I'd still take a bullet because he's a first-class person. What he's doing is something that he believed was the right thing he was doing for Russia."

"I'm quite sure that Ukraine, if they'd wanted to get out of it, could have done," he said. When asked by the hosts if he thinks Zelensky was to blame for not avoiding this conflict—a ridiculous accusation when you consider that Russia invaded Crimea long before Zelensky took power—Ecclestone replied "absolutely."

More historic venues/less in countries run by authoritarian regimes would be nice.

Bernie is a sack of shit that’s sucked up to dictators and sacks of shit for years and is a flow through pipe of stupid who’s best remaining life is a crash barrier. Look at the money Liberty made by not following the instincts of that cretin.

Note: sucking up to dictators and sacks of shit is the history of F1. There are perhaps fewer Porfiro Rubirosa now though

I have to admit F1 is becoming watchable with the new regs, just too busy outside to watch much of it.

Sounds like Alpine let Oscar's option date expire without signing him... doh.

He's a hell of a talent to let slip through your fingers after spending that much $ on him.

Dani Ric is going to be pissed at losing his seat when he thought he had a firm contract.
