ATTN: SoCal Skiers, and possibly climbers...
Yeah I know I should probably post this in Hook Up, but I am, unfortunately a JONG. Plus my guess is this will get more views here.
Anyway, moved to LA about a week ago, and moving again to Orange in a couple weeks for grad school. Hopefully, somewhere out there, is a crew of hard partying n skiing bastards willing to carpool to various local hills and possibly Tahoe this upcoming winter, plus climb an occasional rock and hike around here while it's warm.
About me--I'm 24, rode Alta for 4 years until a couple years ago. I likes to ski fast, and can still do that, but I need to get my hucking legs back after only getting like 5 days the last 2 seasons. Cheers and PM me!

If the snow is good in SoCal, then Baldy and Waterman are fun little areas to go hit and its a short drive from LA. Otherwise plan on hitting Mammoth and the 5 hour commute up the 395

PM Gonehuckin, he can help you out. I'm a bad influence, as some would say, so I would stay away from me. ; )
Whoa, what you gotta say?? Whoa, girls turn 18 every day!!!

You'll love the Eastern Sierra. My brother was out to ski the Checkered Demon out of Bishop when he came across two Utards. They were wondering were everyone was. Well, when you have about 150 miles of the range in plain view from 395 and virtually no populace...there's your answer.
I'm back in Santa Barbara. I'll be skiing somewhere in the range on the weekends. There are plenty of Maggots from SoCal to ride share.
Geez, you like to ski fast. You'll love it when The Wind Machine is in perfect working order.

Cool good to hear there's actually still skiers this far south--So what are most of you SoCal folks doing passwise? I'm thinking of doing something like a 10 day at Tahoe and a pass somewhere else more locally that I can hit on weekends. What is the best plan of action to get the most possible skiing in?

Oh PS Joey--I too am a bad influence--nothing I like more after a solid day of skiing than bad influences.

Tahoe is not where we go, Mammoth is. Tahoe is not an easy drive from So Cal, Mammoth is.
Many of us bought our passes in April, when they were on sale, they are now full price. If you're a student, there's a student rate, go to mammothmountain.comArtist formerly known as yogachik.

My 2 cents:
Learn how to surf and mt bike and enjoy warm winter rock climbing.
I don't think Mammoth is worth the drive and cost for the weekend and would rather save my money and do a week or two in Tahoe or MT or UT. If we get snow in the local mountains, Mt. Baldy ski area is a lot of fun. There is also good backcountry in the local mountains. I generally get a baldy club card for $150, which lets you get cheep lift tickets for you and friends.
Like other said, the Sierra's have an insane amount of excellent backcountry.
Mt High and Snow summit make snow and are close to SD/OC/LA, but can be crowded and boring. I generally only go to them on a powder day when Mt. Baldy doesn't have enough snow. They claim to have good terrain parks, but I don't know. Some years there is no natural local snow, so these two are the only close options.

/\/\Yeah, climbing is definitely the plan so far when not skiing this winter--i do need to learn how to surf though, I am a complete surfing JONG. I am counting on a drive to get to some skiing--isn't Tahoe like 2 hours longer of a drive? Either way the current plan is to at least do a week in Tahoe, if not 2. Definitely will spend some time with fellow Utards this winter as always...
So is Baldy worth it? You mentioned there is a posibility of zero snow there--they don't make any? And where is/how close am I to Sierra BC? Any mags up for some sierra skinning this year?
My minimum goal this season is 30 days...I need the cheapest plan for the best skiing!

Baldy backcountry is fun. Keep in mind that socal has lots of people. LOTS of people. The mountains can be very crowded.
I'm in San Diego - it's 1.5 hours to Baldy, 2.5 to Mt. High, 4-7 to the Sierra, 7ish to Mammoth.
Climbing is very good, Joshua Tree will blow your mind if you've never been there.
I moved to socal two years ago for grad school. I reverted to other fun things to do besides skiing, I don't have the time, money, or stomach for that much driving. Enjoy yourself, I certainly am.

IMO:
Mammoth is awesome and day-in day-out I would rather ski there than Tahoe, but this is an endless debate that has people on both sides of the fence. Check it out for yourself and make your own opinion.
Mt. High, Snow Summit, and Bear Mtn (or whatever its currently called) are totally useless for a good skier that has lived in Utah, JH, or other "real" mtns. I refuse to take Mrs. Comish there.
Baldy can be a very good time. Think of the oldest lifts you have ever seen, usually some sort of clusterfuck after a storm opening lifts, banging on the bullwheel with a piece of bamboo, ticket lines, etc. Ultimately its good terrain, and by far the best in SoCal if a bit short and w/ nothing truly gnarly, but definitely a good time. Worth it for a handful of days a winter. You gotta get it right after a storm as the sun kills it quick and no, they don't have any real snowmaking so it can go a season without solid snow.
Quick flights to Utah on SW or Delta make relatively inexpensive weekends there totally doable.
All the people in San Diego that say Mammoth is too far and gave up skiing because of it, this is the exact reason my SoCal compromise is not San Diego. Its a great town which I really enjoy and has quite a few advantages over most of LA, but the 6.5 to 7 hour drive is way too far. My 4.5 hour drive is just the edge of tolerable and one which we have been doing on average 2 or 3 weekends a month if the snow is good.
The way we get north of your goal of 30 days is to lease a place in Mammoth with friends for the winter, have a season pass, and enjoy it. There are a bunch of SoCal ites that head up there every weekend of the season and this for me was the turning point in enjoying living in SoCal. Most of SoCal is crap, but there are some pretty schweet aspects too if your work, home, location, $$, can all come into balance.
Go check them all out for yourself and decide what you enjoy the most.He who has the most fun wins!

To be fair, you could go there to just hit the park all day when they're up on snowmaking early season. I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your post though, (except the SD drive, but that's a matter of personal tolerance.)
edit: I'm also a recent UCSD grad, living in Del Mar at the moment. Sphinx/406, are you undergrads? Are/were you on the ski team? Do I know you? And by Grove, doesn't Viva mean the coffee shop in the Old Student Center which was/is in financial trouble?Last edited by Adamantium; 08-02-2008 at 05:25 PM.

Last I heard/read (in the UCSD paper, which is horrible) there was some tentative agreement to involve the student business school or something in running the grove, because it has had a lot of trouble staying afloat. That was probably a year ago at this point however.
Edit: More to the point of the OP, here's some SoCal stoke from this past January. Morning powder at Baldy, afternoon waves in Del Mar...

ok, sounds like i'll be getting more than a couple days in at the baldy...sounds like a decent spot!! Keep in mind folks that I was born in the midwest skiing wisconsin until I went to college, to baldy looks like hardly anything to complain about. More to the point of the original post though--i am friendless and alone!! (with the exception of the people i work with, who are film nerds that don't go outside very much) People to play video games with--I got that covered. People to do cool and crazy shit outside with--not so much. Once again, things I know how to do are climb, ski and I want to get my skydive license. I WANT to LEARN how to surf...I know there's a lot of surf mags out there. If anyone has the patience to put up with a total surf JONG, and maybe teach me how to get started, I'd be much obliged. I'll be a quick learner like Johnny Utah I swear!

Baldy takes a lot of natural snow to get going, and in something like 60% of seasons, it will never fully open. Basically, I never expect to ski there but I keep an eye on it and hit it when its good. As for surfing, it just takes lots of time on the water imo. Find a board, maybe read up a bit, and just go out as often as you can.

That was all dead on advice.
I live in Coronado which is south San Diego. Leaving at 4AM, I always roll into Mammoth by 10:15, have breakfast and am on the hill by 11AM. I will deal with the drive 7-9 times a season for much better surf in SD county
Typically a group of 4 of us split a condo that is about $180 a night. Sometimes the 4th bales out, so there is room with us, if a fold out coach works for you. I guess I will post that info during the season when the forth bales.
The goal is always to get 30+ days in, so I am sure we will have some room for a solo person at times. To keep everything on the cheap, you need the student pass and a crew to split expenses with.
I never ski locally (within a few hours), as the drive to Mammoth is totally worth it IMO.
Solos that are good people, feel free to pm me during the season and I will try and post up the last minute bale outs from the normal crew.

so is it worth it to get a mammoth (student) pass then? Currently thinking a mammoth pass, combined with a few days in tahoe plus a few days at baldy (assuming it snows there).
