Need advice...herpes related
alright, this is kinda fucked, and clearly an alias,
but thursday night i hooked up with a coworker in a drunken stupor, and they refrained from letting me know they had type 1, low transmission herpes.
we were safe, and well, i guess im just pissed because i was not informed until another coworker advised me of this this evening.
so how freaked should I be?
I have been seeing another person recently and have yet to seal the deal there....should I wait, etc?
anyone have any advice?
kinda freaking out a little

I'm pretty sure that they cant test for herpes, like they can for aids, hepatitis, gohnorrea and shit. I think you need to have a sore for them to be able to test for it/diagnose it...
Edit: Dammit!! Beaten to the punch... but hey, sounds like you already got some infoLast edited by Diamond Joe; 07-27-2008 at 09:39 PM.

I'd appreciate if you'd refrain from involving my name w/ a std related alias.

they cant test without a sore. some places do blood work, but its expensive and even if it tests positive its not for sure because it could only mean you've had a cold sore before. i went through the same thing years ago... never had any sores so im not worried about it

so... the coworker has HSV-1? Where? HSV-1 can present orally or genitally. If they have oral HSV-1 and you didn't have oral.. then you should be ok, especially if they weren't having an outbreak. Incidentally, about 70%+ of people test positive for oral HSV-1, commonly called cold sores. It can be transmitted to the genital area though, and that can get rough.
If it's HSV-2, you have a different issue. In either case, your caregiver can do PCR based testing to confirm both infection AND type. From what I've heard it can be tough to get them to do the full testing, they usually only test for presence of HSV... and don't do testing to differentiate between 1 and 2. bug them to find out if you have to.

Type 1, i.e. HSV-1 - you sure? Type 1 is oral herpes. It causes cold sores.
HSV-2 is genital herpes. The two viruses are pretty similar, actually, but have different "preferred" sites of infection.
That said, it is possible to get HSV-1 genitally, too. However, genital HSV-1 is much less likely to cause recurrent outbreaks.
Do you know if your partner was taking valcyclovir (Valtrex)? That reduces the rate of transmission. Condoms do, also. If you've ever had a cold sore, you most likely have antibodies to HSV-1, again reducing your risk of infection.
Here's an article on herpes transmission:
Preventing Sexual Transmission of Genital Herpes (HSV-2)
If you study Figure 2, you'll see that the risk of getting infected after one sexual contact, while nonzero, is very low.
Time from infection to first symptoms is about six days. If you don't develop symptoms, an antibody test will determine whether you've been asymptomatically infected. It is possible to shed virus and infect another person, even if you don't have symptoms. However it takes time to develop measurable levels of antibodies. You have to wait 12-16 weeks for a negative antibody test, to be ~90% certain that you don't have it.
Here is some information about herpes testing:
Herpes Testing
Bottom line: your risk of getting infected is low. However, if you got infected, you may develop lesions in a week or two. If you don't develop lesions, it can take 12-16 weeks to confirm that you weren't asymptomatically infected.
I'd recommend you see your doctor, who can examine you and render a real (as opposed to this DOKTAR INTARWEBS) opinion. I also recommend that you be honest with your prospective partner about what happened (perhaps fudge the date of your drunken hookup, if necessary). Who knows, they might say, "Oh that's ok - I have herpes, too." It's a really common STD.

Tests won't show much until you know you have it.

You should wait to hook up with another person until you know for sure about your status.

Time will tell...
"In the past, genital herpes was caused mainly by the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). But now, new genital herpes infections are caused equally by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). The majority of people who are going to get a primary outbreak will do so between 3 days to 2 weeks after exposure."

I'm less interested in the std aspect of this, and more interested in the gender neutral specifics of the post, meaning we have a maggot who hasn't come out to us, yet.
