Ok so Fluffs has been wearing a cone for two weeks, while his hot spot healed over.

No scabs as of today, so I tried taking the cone off. Within two minutes he scratched the same area hard enough that he broke through the skin. Cone is back on and I feel pretty bad that I rushed getting it off of him.

So now I'm thinking the cone will need to stay on until the fur is completely grown back, which I assume will be another couple weeks. Who knows if he'll scratch again at that point.

KInda thinking a sock (or sticky vet wrap) covering his claws might help? I'm thinking he'd be obsessed with trying to get the sock off, but then again, he's adapted somewhat well to the cone, so maybe not.

Calling the vet Monday, in the meantime curious if anyone has any experience here. (The vet doesn't think the original itching was 'psychological', rather it stemmed from an allergic reaction to something that we weren't able to identify.)

Iím experienced with OCD cat. Itís tough. It needs to be completely healed before you take the cone off and then only short periods. Heís been thinking about that scab for two weeks. I had Chao in the cone for two months! Itís very hard to watch them struggle with cone day after day. Soft Cone (Comfy Cone) is great. So easy to get on and off. Highly recommend. Psychological is part but so is physical. Fish oil will help his dry skin. I use a syringe to feed Chao. He likes it ok too. I also use fur mouse and flea medicine every two weeks. Chao is in good shape. Very little compulsive grooming these days.

Itís a battle. You can win if youíre willing

Hey 4matic, I've been following your posts and Chao's progress for a long time.

I thought of him as I was writing my post, and I even tried to word it to make our two kitties issues less similar, but you're correct. Whether it's irritated skin or something psychological that caused the original spot, you are absolutely right - of course he's been thinking about scratching that itch, regardless. I had put on an anti itching spray just prior to removing the cone but it was pretty non medical looking over the counter type stuff.

The comfy cone looks like a good choice. Like I said this generally sucky cat has taken to the cone better than expected, but you can see the frustration on his face when he clunks into something - this cone is rigid and strong enough that the impediment pushes back at Fluffes with his own force, stopping him mid step. If something softer can cover the same area that would be awesome.

    Thank you sincerely

Edit we and the vet checked extensively but thankfully fleas are not present

Sure. My pleasure. The support helps! I got one size above the smallest so Chao couldnít get at his tail. He actually kinda liked the soft cone. It was calming for him to be isolated from his tail so he could rest. Here he is today. All dirty and happy like a normal cat.

I used lanacane on Chaoís itchy spots while he was still in the cone so it might help him forget about it. Donít know whether it worked or not. Also, he had a lot of dry bumps on his skin that are gone now. I credit the fish oil for that.

    Will report back.

Truth. Winter activity decreases significantly with lack of sun exposure. Longer recharging times and stuff...

After almost 3 years living together Hobbes the great loaf is finally tolerating Bosco's presence. Another 4 or 5 years and the may actually snuggle with him. Cat is a complete wildling...

I bet Martin's just stoked as fuck on the scratchy pineapple surface.

Real question though - why'd you get such a green pineapple??

"...researchers claim that the cats appeared to be less stressed during the exams when played the cat-specific music, compared with both classical music and silence."

De-stressing music for cats. Trying it out now, seemed to put the dog to sleep but no visible reaction from the cat:

I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards." Ė Edward Abbey

Cats are dangerous. Turfing can be perilous. Asserting dominance is dicey. It is best done gently.

And then blowing it in to the Big Dog's face.
    Romeo is becoming a stud.

    Kisa's stache is cool.

If that guy had picked that cat up by the scruff, tossed it and booted it, I think i'd grab that guitar and rip into a rendition of ' I gave my love a cherry' a' la Bluto in Animal House. On his head.

    Fucking people.
