We have a cat door in our basement door. We feed the cat down there so the dog doesn't eat it, not to mention keeping the other dog favorite down there: the cat litter box.

Thanks powbmps, and thanks KQ, I'll pass this along. It's been rough losing her beloved dog then her 2 cats so close together. And now she's freaking out about the dog we rescued, old lady Lenora isn't fixed and has been having her period for 3+ weeks, apparently not abnormal but always a bit scary. She's also covered in lipomas with a couple big bumps likely to be sarcomas. Ms Boissal regularly lets all of these issues get the best of her and freaks out about the dog's impending doom even though she's doing 10x better than when we rescued her... Usually she can be talked off the ledge rather quickly but it's been a struggle around the house.
We shaved Ugly yesterday, he's now the de-facto emotional support kitty but he gets so dirty he isn't very pleasant to pet. Ms Boissal's relationship with animals is fairly transactional, they get the best quality of life and in return they must be available to be petted. You only need to pet Ugly for a minute or so to get black fingers though and that isn't part of the deal. She grabbed him, washed him in the sink, took the clippers to him, then washed him again. He hissed a couple times but otherwise didn't even try to run and he's now clean, relatively pleasant to the touch, not as chubby looking, and overall quite regal with his chest poof and his duster tail.

This is KitKat. She is my brother’s cat, he brought her along when he came to help care for my Mom after her 2 ER visits in less than a week. It is a Bengal Cat that was a stray and showed up at his house.
GG was not happy. She headed upstairs and stayed there the duration of the 3-week visit. KitKat went upstairs at least once a day and got her ass kicked by GG every single time.
GG upstairs glowering at KitKat down below.

I can so commisserate with her. My old horse is circling the drain. Got his hoof abscess cleared up but now his back end is going. I noticed he was kinda crab walking behind last week and then last night he came in from the pasture totally sideways and stepping on himself behind. It was horrifying. Gave him some NSAIDS which helped and he walked out better this morning. Mentally he is all there - interested, alert, eating but his body is betraying him and everyday I have to weigh if I should give him one more day or put him down. It's brutal.

KQ, can't imagine going through this with a horse. Must be heart breaking to watch him struggle.
We lost one of our first chickens yesterday, no idea how or why, found her dead in the run. She was a reliable egg producer and a goofy ass bird. Got some good pirate moments with her. Hopefully things calm down a bit on the animal front..."Your wife being mad is temporary, but pow turns do not get unmade" - mallwalker the wise

I am uncertain when my heartache over Misty will recede, but Freya is doing her best to help us along. Two weeks with us now and she made her first trip around the house. She was fine with the dogs, to bad TG hissed at her and ran off.

Pretty well.
We kept them separated for 5 days or so with Sly living in my daughters room.
Then there were daily forays and meetings, all of which went as expected: some hissing from each, but minor on the part of Spud.
Lots of teensy kitty hilarity. They play pretty well now with only one exception when Spud got too excited in one of the cardboard boxes where I used to try to entertain him with string games. He played pretty rough and didn't rein it in with Sly, so Sly freaked and squawked.
Kitty box usage has been shared .
The expected problem of Spud eating the wet kitty food when he can.
95F here in the foothills, too hot for me.
I hope your horse is better.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

That's great about the cats. My boomerang boys and their long lost brothers are fully integrated now. You'd never know they spent 12 years apart.
Unfortunately I had to put the old guy down today. It was time. Last Wednesday he had done something to his hip or back and could not walk a straight line. It was like he had no control of his hind quarters.
Merciful but never easy. He's buried in his pasture where I can remember him peacefully grazing and kicking up his heels.“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis
