TR: You Got It (The Right Patch) 7/17/08

    Place: The Right Patch

    Participant: Vets

Purposes: Easy access summer skiing after three weeks away from the mountains (Chicago/Washington D.C. TR to follow soon.) July turns to keep the streak alive. 57th consecutive month skiing.

Photos: Passers by, self-timer, and Vets

Temperature: 69 degrees at The Right Patch (96 degrees in Carson Valley.)

    Soundtrack: NKOTB

(Edit: I had to replace the original NKOTB video with a bellydancer because embedding was disabled on all of the originals. Enjoy.)

First a passers by photochop recovery photo:

If you look closely you can see me skiing by the choke next to the rock.

Here is one of the self-timer shots taken from above:

Similar to my pass the dutchie on The Left Patch side TR from 6/19/08 I did an animated .gif from a series of self-timer images:

Here is what is left of The Right Patch on 7/17/08:

Not much, but it did provide some smooth corn turns with minimal suncups. (When I headed up to the patches in June there was too much snow covering the road to be able to drive up to The Right Patch. A lot of snow melted in a month.)

Roundtop, Saddlebag, and anyplace else that is still holding snow are in my near future. (Sonora Pass isn't holding much if any snow now, Mrs. Vets and I hiked up Blue Canyon Creek on Sunday where the flowers were really going off, TR upcoming.)
I'd appreciate any beta on other summer patch skiing options.

Way to get after it, now that I'm a gimp I can truly appreciate getting a few turns mid-summer.

    Update and Snow Recon

Here is a picture of "The Right Patch" one week later:

I did a snow recon mission yesterday.
First, I mountain biked to the top of chair 2 at Kirkwood to get a good view of Roundtop and Sisters.

The "W" patch still looks skiable. The saddle between Roundtop and Sisters is pretty wide, but doesn't offer much vert compared to previous summers. The October Patch/Patch 19/Foot of the Sisters Patch looks like it is still holding up. I also skied with someone at "The Center Patch" later that day who told me that The October Patch/Patch 19/Foot of the Sisters Patch was still pretty smooth. (BTW "The Center Patch" has enough snow for about 6 turns per lap.) I plan to find out tomorrow (Friday, 7/25.) I might also ski the patch that angles toward Winnemucca Lake (not seen in photo) because it looked like it offered more vert than the other patches up there.
On Sunday (7/27) I'll check out what Saddlebag has to offer.

I was on round top yesterday.

There's a bit of a patch left, but it's not very skiable. although there were a bunch of tracks on it. I wouldn't bother.

    Geoff,
Was this the patch (saddle area) to looker's right of the W patch or the one to looker's right of the W that angles toward Winnemucca Lake?
Did you go up to the top?
If so, how did the snow look in the east facing bowl below the summit, high above Winnemucca Lake?

I think you guys should make a patch of honor to proudly display your stripes as dedicated summer patch skiers.

(I mean that as a compliment)
