i was weeding through old Ski and Skiing magazines over the weekend.
one issue (forget which one it was) had a news story/mini-feature about some guy who had taken over one of the OG resorts back East.
in order to get more folks on the slopes he slashed ticket prices, took the season pass from $600 down to $199 and incurred the wrath of just about everyone in the industry.
what happened, according to the story is that he octupled his season pass sales, thus ended up making more money than if he'd kept the price at $600. he also offered some sweet family deals and tons of weekend specials all through the season to entice the daytrippers to the hill.
wish i could remember what hill it was and when it was (the issues I was weeding through ranged from 1997 - 2008, this article was in one of the older 1999 time period issues).
still, it was interesting to see how some folks go about making money. this guy offered killer deals and was paid in full by his consumers.
gotta wonder what's going through a resorts head when they boost prices up to $85+...there has to come a time when the number cruncher says "Hmmm, we only get X-percent of skiers on the mountain at $85 a ticket...wonder how many we would get if we rolled prices back to $40?"...you gotta wonder.
do less people on the hill = higher ticket prices
and/or would lower ticket prices = more people on the hill?
there's always the cold, corporate angle that folks will go regardless of price (The Rolling Stones have been feeding off of this for years, charging $400 a ticket for their shows, which is outrageous, but people are willing to pay it, so why offer cheaper tickets?)...
food for thought.
we haven't hit the $85 mark in Tahoe yet, but Squaw, Heavenly, and Northstar are getting close.

Basically, JH has no real immediate competition because it is a destination resort. Steamboat is the same way. Then look at Winter Park and the rest of the CO resorts that have next-door competition.

Fucking insane. The sad thing is the new tram is going to only increase crowds with these jacked up prices. Looks like I'm staying at my job one more winter where passes are free One more reason to support the other local hill (Snow King).

the good piece of news is that they actually lowered the season pass price. JHMR tends to screw the locals so this completely blew me away. I figured they'd use the new tram as an excuse to make us pay even more?

$85?
I'll argue that there isn't a cold corporate angle on coming up with the pay prices. I interviewed for a marketing analyst position at Mammoth. I can conclusively say that they lacked thorough analysis when it came to understanding their clientele and pricing.

Yes, season passes are the same price as last year, but if you had a pass last year you get a 10% "loyalty" discount.
They raised the weekend pass price- sounds good to me, you should pay a premium if you live here and are not going to be a skid.
No weekday pass, that is gonna hurt some skids though.
Day ticket prices? Does not impact me. My friends yes, but they all have good jobs and families and will pay a premium for the experience. Well, a few will.
You want to play, you got to pay.
See you in tram line bitches!

What do you need to show to buy the pass in person? Is there a picture on it?
I'd like to get back to Jackson this winter and the 10 day pass would be great, but I can't get up there to buy it.Originally Posted by wintermittentOriginally Posted by snowsprite
