Source for dog bones that don't come from beef
I am not really looking into getting into a debate over whether giving bones to a dog to chew on is ok,
my dog used to get bones to chew on all the time, as such, she had nice white teeth. however, due to medical reasons, she can't have beef protein, so no bones for her. Her teeth are getting really bad and i was hoping that some of you might know of a source to get bones from another source, thinking elk or buffalo might work for her.
thanks

Did you know that bones are bad for dogs?
Have you tried the meat department of your local grocery store?

I think most pet stores carry pork femur bones. My dog loves 'em.

Most smaller pet stores have a raw food freezer or two that carry frozen pork bones (as others have suggested). My guy loves'em. Haven't seen them at the larger chains, but then again, haven't looked too hard lately for them in said stores.

I get pork shoulder bones from the local BBQ place. I wouldn't recommend deer or elk.

in terms of what? giving her bones? she thinks it would be good, but she can't have standard protein sources. (we still think its a protein source issue)
she gaves us dental chew things to try based on chicken but they are like greenies and i personally don't think those do jack as our dog can go right through them with no issues

Would goat or sheep be a 'standard protein source'?
Sigh: you'd have to clean the lamb leg before roasting.Last edited by cantunamunch; 07-14-2008 at 05:13 PM.

Elk femur. Like you said, very good for their teeth."if it's called tourist season, why can't we just shoot them?"

lamb probably not so much., she has gone through lamb , salmon, venison, can't have beef, chicken is iffy . Currently on hypoallergenic diet., its chicken based but its lypholized so she shouldn't react to the protein.
pork femur might work, might give it a try but the consequences kind of suck if it doesn't (week or so of bloody mucousy diarrhea)

Nylabone might work to keep teeth clean and not get your dog sick.

I was thinking nylabone too. Jack loves 'em.

she has nylabones, and loves em, but she stops chewing on them after a while after the newness is done. yea it happened with the bones too, but she always went back to them.
