EURO 2004 (what we call soccer)
Had the opportunity to watch Germany-Holland tonight.
This shit is ridiculously good. I love how passionate these people are about that sport. Man, I just feel like going out and having a pint now.
Anyway, check it out if you have a chance - what a sport!"When restraint and courtesy are added to strength, the latter becomes irresistible."

super excited that france beat britain. was watching the game at a local bar with some brits, and they were stoked that they were winning. then zidane scored his first goal and they were still satisfied with the draw, then came the second goal and it became one of the situations where you saw grown men cry together.
even more elated that greece beat portugal.

Heh, Portugal. There's a Portuguese gardener on our street. Two years ago I gave him a hard time when Portugal couldn't score their way out of the first round in the World Cup. When I saw him last week he just smiled at me and shook his head and walked away.
Futbol, it's a beautiful sport. We'll win one for ya Thursday night, Shoe.

We were enjoying a nice snooker game in a bar on the costa brava when we heard cries and saw English flags handed by very excited english-speaking tourists.
I deduced that England had scored (yeah, you can call me Sherlock) and resumed my game (which actually ended by a bitter defeat).
I don't like football (ok, you call it soccer, huh?) that much, I find it too slow, although germany vs netherland was a nice counterexample, and I generally stick to rugby.
Later, as I was listening to the results of the european elections, I heard that France finally won thanks to Zidane. And even if I don't like football that much, it's always cheerful to beat England It nearly made me forget about the heat and the few patches of snow that melt up in the pyrénées.

06-16-2004, 06:17 AM #11Remember the Rugby World Cup? Yeah? Now shut up.
1- brits are vindicative and always remember you of their last victory (remember waterloo?)
2- rugby and football are connected
Now I understand why I was so cheerful sunday evening (maybe the few mojitos helped).

Hehe, it was you who suggested the superiority of rugby. After Johnson retired (and Wilkinson has been injured) though the team has been pretty weak. The 6 Nations hurt.

Does it really make any difference?
I've become completely enthralled in the European Cup. I've been watching the games on the ESPN.Soccernet.com GameCast during work, recording games and watching them at night, and tuning into the Fox Sports World Report every night.
Went into NYC to Nevada Smiths (English football bar) on Sunday with my girlfriend and a buddy to watch the England-France game (and more so, to watch the English and French fans!!). It is such a spectacle. While the pub was packed and all were standing shoulder to shoulder, I doubt that they sold much beer as nobody would peel their eyes from the screens long enough to go to the bar!
Van Nistlerooy's (sp?) goal vs. Germany yesterday was sweet.. here's hoping that England and Sweden make it deep this year!

Although it has nothing to do with the Euro Cup, US National team is currently ranked #9 in the world! Are we really that good, or is this pretty meaningless right now?

Blasphemy from you anti England speakers!!! I can't stand the fackin' frogs and wish someone would take Zidane out. Can't wait to watch the Sweden v. Italy game friday. Fox sports world has a few of the games. I'd have to order the whole package for $180 to get them all. I'll have to live w/ the few games I'll get. I'm hoping England and Sweden go far. I like the danes and the dutch but I don't think the danes will have enough scoring punch to go much further. We'll see about the dutch though.

soccer for newbies
when the referee stand like that in front of a player that just commited a foul play, hand high in the sky showing a yellow piece of cardboard, he asks for the aforementionned player to come and smell under his arm.
If the player is too proud to submit, the referee notes his name on the cardboard and runs over with a hard face.
In modern soccer, it is a general agreement between players that nobody should submit to a referee, and they even often recriminate and shout at him on such occasions.
when the card is red, the player usually goes off the field and waits in the showers for the punishment to come.
